Hamad truly is the best when it comes to emergency care for major complications during labor. However, if you never end up needing that kind of specialised care, you may wish you had gone somewhere you couldn't hear labouring women in the room next door. That being said, each birth experience at Hamad depends on which nurse pair you end up with, which doctor happens to be on duty, how many other women are in labor at the same time as you and how assertive you are with the medical staff. If you can afford it, by all means, go to Al-Ahli or Emadi or Doha clinic. You'll have to weigh in the risk of emergency transfer to Hamad in case of any complications (which really is very rare). Bear in mind though that if your baby is transferred to Hamad after birth for major complications, you may not get a room at Hamad at all which is a killer if you're planning on breatfeeding. If you decide to go to Hamad for the birth, your husband will not be allowed in. Your mother or other female companion will be allowed in but the medical staff can kick them out if they want too. As soon as you arrive, have your companion develop a rapport with your nurse pair and be really friendly; they truly appreciate it and will be more likely to let that person (and more campanions if they REALLY like you) stay with you throughout your labor. During examinations, they will ask your mom to step outside for a moment, just remind them to let her in when they're done. Also, at the delivery stage, no one other than the medical staff is allowed in the room. If your mom is friendly enough and you hold on tightly enough to her blouse, they can't physically remove her from the room.

I had several people with me at once (occasionally stepping out and taking turns). My friend had both of her sisters with her until delivery.

At Hamad, it's worth going with someone who has attended other births there who can tell you what to expect and who can support you if you need to be assertive with the staff. I would suggest hiring a doula. There are a few in Qatar now. Google 'doula' to find out more about what these women do. Also, I would suggest taking a childbirth preparation class which is also available through some doulas in Qatar.

You can get a private room for a charge but it isn't guaranteed.

Happy pregnancy and birth :)
