I have used gtalk. Downloaded apps called Fring on iPhone, asked my friend to do the same on his iPhone. Connected to gtalk on wireless, and made phone calls. Same works for skype as well. Next option, Voip to phone is also possible. Google SIP and you would get plenty of answers.
