As a rule if I want to buy a car I always look in the internet for reviews, specially from consumers. There you will find a lot of helpful informations.
I had an x trail before and had an expensive engine repair, its a fact that they have some design flaw in their engine. Fortuner in the other hand is based on a pick up truck, so don't expect a comfortable ride, besides its prone to rollover.
Maybe you can consider a honda crv, its not perfect but much better.
Note: previously owned a toyota and nissan before presently happy with honda now.
Cheers!
