Honda Civic 2006 onwards (might have to stretch your budget a bit)
Mitsubushi Lancer GLX 2007 onwards (can be had for approx 24k)
Also look at Mazda 3, Toyota Corollas, Nissan Sunnys, older model Magnas, Accords, Camrys.
Avoid European, American used cars. You will be stuck with huge bills for parts replacements if the previous owners didnt treat them right (very likely). Ford Mondeos are exceptionally good. But you might find one that was a taxi in its previous life in Saudi. Avoid.
What to avoid -
Peugeots (all shapes and sizes, leave them for the lebanese and egyptians - wait, you might want one). Poorly built garbage. Electrics go crazy and plastic parts start falling off within 2 years.
Anything with a Land Rover or Jeep/Chrysler/Dodge badge on it. Leave them for the Brits and Americans. Let them have the pleasure of owning that which they can't afford to put petrol in back home. Also to have the pleasure of running around dealerships to get hard to obtain replacement parts.
