Better camera from above is surely Nikon D5100. Couple of months back, I was in same position as you are... and after lot of researches i went for D5100. D5100 is bit more expensive than Canon, but once you touch both cameras you will feel the difference.

But, you need to have a good eye to take great snaps and for that matter both of these cameras are equally good.
