In the Maldives a few weeks back the President refused to allow a law that would make it illegal for a man to have sex with his wife without her consent, saying it was "not permissible under any circumstance for a woman to refrain from it when the husband is in need" due to their religion.

So when one country has statistics about rape that are different to another country, you have to keep in mind that rape means different things to different people.

Some people, like me, think that rape is having sex (or attempting to have sex) with someone who doesn't consent to sexual intercourse.
But other people think that it is okay under some circumstances for a man to have sex with a woman, even if she doesn't consent, and in their view this isn't rape -it's called marriage.
