As for driving with the family at night, there is nothing to worry about. The highways of S. Arabia are lined with "cat's eye" which reflects the headlights of the car and make driving easy. In fact, I used to love driving at night rather than day time. Also, the highways have police patrolling the roads 24/7.
The most important thing is for the driver not to fall asleep while driving. There are many spots on the highway where one can park his car and take rest. These are safe parking zones and are marked. One could also find many motels at major petrol pumps where one can get some rest. Lastly, always fill up your tank when the needle shows half tank just for safety sake.
