Very true, Britexpat.... The sense of dignity of doing any labour is very less in Asian countries, especially India...

Sometimes people are "ashamed / embarrased" to do menial jobs in front of thir own countrymen, but will do so in foreign lands.

The maid who comes to my Mom's goes to work in about 5 - 7 houses plus does the cleaning of a bank too, except on Sundays...She makes around 20 - 25,000 Rupees a month....plus the festival allowances, gifts from those who visit, especially the NRI children who entrust their parents in their care...

If they stay long and loyal, it is not a rare thing for the employer to buy land, build a house, send the kids for higher studies, get the kids married ,etc and in very rare case get married to the maid itself :-)

Because It is always in the mind set that Gulf countries one can make more, just because one makes it so the others one to follow too.

But why will they come as far as Doha when they can move to the nearest town and earn much more!

There is a huge scarcity of maids in the cities nowdays.

But face it QR160 is not as the same as QR700?

Rs 2000= 2000/12.5= 160 Riyals.

But thats only in small towns. Poor people who have many kids send a few of them to do household chores and they collect this paltry sum from the household they work. Thats how it works.Kind of exploitation or child labor!

But most people are smart nowdays and can earn much more if they want to. Even more than what they earn in Qatar.

In india a decent maid will cost about Rs 250 to Rs 400 per day(12 hrs) depending on her skill whether she cooks or only cleans. Fooding excluded.

Part timers are more expensive. They charge Rs 150 to 200 for 4 hrs. Then they will do 2 to 3 houses.

This is the going rate in most Indian cities.

But in small towns and suburbs you can still get full timers for as little as Rs 2000 a month!

So no one will come to the Gulf for 700 QR!

We offered a 12000 Rs (1000 QR) to a maid in Kerala but she said she is getting about 10000 Rs in her part time work in kerala. In UAE we paid 800 QR to our part time kerala maid.

I have been lucky then....didn't pay more than Rs. 3000/-for a full time maid so far who comes at 6.30AM and leaves at 8PM with about 2 hrs. rest in the afternoon plus food and some tips in the form of money, clothes etc spread all through the year....:) may be because she doesn't drive a Corolla...:)

The maids are a variety of their own...They will come and work for meagre amount if they like you and will not budge at the same time to another offer even if you offer 1000 Riyals....

And most of them like being with a big family with lots of members and money....In other words, influential families... The way most of us feel prouder to be associated with big names when we look for a job....even if the pay is not much....

As for conversion rate: 5k INR= 500 QAR approx. Earning 750 QAR here doesn't make sense, coz they work atleast in 4 houses / day.

For a living home nurse , minimum monthly charges are 5000 to 6000 in Kerala now happy. I can give you the numbers of the agencies.

If you need house help its harder

Part time maids in India charge about 5k just for cleaning, and cooking. Washing and ironing clothes not included. Have heard from my brother that these days they have terms n conditions too.

1. Will come at 9am and have to leave by 11am

2. Two days off in a week

3. Bonus required for all the festivities (irrespective whether it is christmas, Eid, or Diwali)

4. Bonus should include money and clothes for children..

etc, etc etc..Now, this is a fact in Bangalore at least :)

Its true Dot Com. Trust me

we were in need of a full time house help at home, since parents are alone and mom had to take complete bed rest. We tried through many agencies, offerd up to 6000 rupees and none turned up.

I don't see any point in Indian maids coming to work in the Gulf for Qr750, when they can easily earn the same amount back in India as well. Darn maids are hard to get for that price back in India even nowadays.

to learn other skills atleast I have met several ladies who are now beauticians and tailors.

Hopefully this maid culture will die and those who exploit them should die of plague

Maid and labour work visas are banned by Indian emigration ages back. Thses workers are not given Enigration clearence by the Protector of Emigrants. Instead the travel agents bribe the people in the airport emigration and send them , they call it "pushing". After this , each time they travel they have to bribe , since the stamp put in the passport is fake.

Indian ladies should be atleast 30 years of age for them to be allowed to come to GCC countries on maid visa. It's not what the GCC countries implemented, rather this is law imposed by India

Mr Omer KHAYYAM, Thanks for all your decent suggestions though you dont deserve it? By the way which country and school did you learn your basic language from ? I am "awed"....Or did your Mom teach you...?

God bless you, especially for jumping at the thread and getting dissappointed....Sour grapes...

And I am interested only in seeing whether Indian maids are allowed in Qatar...The other topic came by chance.. And get lost....

It is in a way sad as a lot of good ladies have rescued their families back home from poverty.

But last month I called a lady whose number was passed on by a friend... She definitely sounded "odd" to me. Then I thought I was being a bit hyper and asked my neighbour lady friend to call the maid without telling her any of my views. In 10 minutes flat, I got back a call asking " You gave me the number of a maid or a prostitute?"

HAHA........

I am not sure but I think its for the entire Gulf because of their poor record of sexual exploitation against housemaids.
