Heard about someone that left the country with significant personal loan unpaid a few years ago. Immediately after, he got a job and moved to Houston. He and the family lived happily there, the debt was all but forgotten.
Fast forward a few years, while on business travel he transited at Dubai airport. As you may have guessed, he was denied boarding onto the next leg of his trip and taken straight to the police custody where he was told to pay the debt or face jail. Luckily, his family (and company) are able to quickly arrange the amount of money to clear up the debt so he won't have to serve his time....
(This story circulated among my community, I can not personally vouch for its authenticity but I would not be surprised if it is true).
Morals of the story:
1. The debtors (and goverments) here have a long memory.
2. You took the debt, you better pay. That's the only right thing to do
I also had a same issue. I was in UAE 2008-2009, mid of 2009 i lost my job due to financial crisis.
