Extremely slow process in Qatar---Is that how it works

Folks,

I flew to Qatar sometime in Jan and had a discussion with the folks in a state owned finance company in Qatar.

Through the man power consultant, I've been told that I got the job and details about my salary and benefits were shared over an email, in Feb. I've been asked to give my passport copy and other details. Since then, these folks are working on  my contract , Visa etc but no contact. Everytime I contact my consultant, he says that they are working on it and things happen very slow here and to be patient.

Is that really how it works here?? 5 weeks to send the contract and no contact with the company? Is there anyplace (website) where I can go and check whether my visa has been applied?

I am little nervous over this slow process as I am not used to this in countries where i worked before (US, UK, India)

Please advice

I heard back from my consultant that this is being delayed because of Qatartization efforts. But the company feels very strongly to bring me on board. They have already spent few months and have done many interviews and finally selected me. They are very sure that they are not going to get a localite with the required expertise and experience in the near future....I hope it happens fast...

oh and by the way!, the hr even taunted me that I am in such a hurry, they told me with all proud guts that "It has only been 2 months!, you are in a rush!".....

2 months? Rush?? I'm indeed lost in the abyss.... :)

Unbelievable....

well i guess, almost everybody rode the same boat, and now i am on that boat too. I signed offer from the telco there, back in January, and it took them 2 months just to clear it internally!!. After i signed, all i know the process is moving, 3 weeks after they will call me to tell me, there are some problems that needed my attention!. Wow! you tell me that after 3 weeks!! and it never moved an inch!! and so after all that trouble was fixed 4 weeks ago, they just applied the visa last week!. What?? And also, i wouldnt know that it has moved to the application stage if i havent called them. I told them, look mate, I can wait, fine, but just tell me where do we stand now and where are the papers, all I get was, "i dont know", "it takes time", "no update", " i told you before it will take time" blah blah all the darn excuse!

and yet they are the one who's annoyed! making you feel that you're wrong and you dont understand! wow! am i in another dimension?

so now im in the stage where i now have to wait for the visa indefinitely, until 1) another s**t happens, 2) it is done or 3) it is rejected, only God knows when would that be. For them, they are managing my expectation in such a way that a visa application is like a bird you let go from a cage.........you never know if it will come back to you, and if it comes back to you, its yours, just like letting go of the one you love. If it doesnt come back, sorry mate, better luck next time!

no assurance, no guarantees, nothing.

Welcome to Qatar my friend...

U should be thank ful that it's this slow now, if u came here 5 years ago, u should have seen what was the deal back then. SInce all the ministries were shifting from one place to another, they would ask u to go back and forth, just for the fun of it i guess... cuz once u reach there, they will be like no go to the new branch, when u go to the new branch they will send u back. In the end it would turn out that they didnt know anything about the stuff that i wanted. That's how it is here.

It's always the small things that make big differences.

Was the same for me - first contact was beginning of October, we agreed on everything by the end of October, and the Visa and everything was ready by December - plane landed on December 17th...

So it's the Visa procedure that takes so long...but get used to it, as soon as you're here, you will see that the attitude of many people and companies is just like this...quite understandable with 50 degress ;-) (this is the excuse I think of whenever I get upset from someone who is slooooooooow again...)

If it's a state owned company, then don't hold your breath.  They are scaling back the hiring of expats, as per the previous thread from earlier this week.

Try looking in the private sector instead.
