Plans for cap on expat job tenure
From Friday's Peninsula: No plans for cap on expat job tenure
DOHA: Qatar values its expatriate workforce and has no plans to emulate Saudi Arabia’s example and pack off long-staying foreign workers.
A Saudi Minister last week hinted at his government’s plans not to renew job visas of expatriate workers after six years. Other GCC countries have occasionally looked at similar policies.
“We categorically rule out any plans to refuse to renew job visas for long-staying expatriate workers,” the source said.
The daily also quoted a number of nationals as saying they were against packing off long-staying and experienced expatriate workers as that would mean a major blow to the Qatari economy.
Nearly all key sectors of the economy would be severely affected if expatriate workers are to leave after six years.
A national said the worst-affected would be the education sector, for instance, where a majority of teachers are foreigners.
Few days back, some1 had posted an article that expatriates send back home a huge amount of money which was bothering to the poster and lot of local people.... Now , this is a gr8 article to prove that it is the expatriates who is the backbone of the Qatari Economy.
Well done Qatar !
You and I do, but people whose parents were born here seem to hold out hope. This sort of policy would end all of that. Fortunately Qatar, unlike KSA, is not in a position to take such drastic measures.
Saudi Arabia always got to Extreme...
But they don't offer citizenship anyway. We all come here knowing that in advance - don't we ?
The large population of life-long expats that lived here would be in a difficult position. If the gov did implement such a policy, it would be a way to clear out these people and prevent them from clamouring for citizenship.
What would be the real issue if the government decided to do this ?
Can't say I will be here for six years, but for those who will be, I guess this is good news.
After six years - Que sera sera.....
Good for those who want to stay long-term. Also good to see an appreciation for the ex-pats in the article.
