Strict ban imposed on junk food in school canteens
There is some cheerful news for parents who are concerned about junk food their children are exposed to in school canteens.
The Public Services Department of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education has just banned unhealthy food sold in school canteens, including products containing high amounts of fat, sugar and salt.
The list of banned items include chocolates, potato chips and nuggets, processed meats, soft drinks and energy drinks, all of which can harm the health of students, according to Qatar Tribune.
This is a solid move in the right direction. Cutting down on junk food and substituting it with healthier food will go a long way in ensuring children’s health in the long run.
The ministry has also updated the list of food items that can be sold in school canteens, bringing it up to more than 60.
Pancakes and sandwiches prepared using brown flour and whole grains will be available for the first time. Snacks like biscuits and cakes can also be sold once a week.
Milk and milk products, salads, fruits and vegetables are also in the ‘allowed’ list.
Now, isn’t that a much-needed move? Congratulations to everyone who helped take this decision.
