200 Nepalese deaths in Qatar per year
About 200 Nepalese migrant workers die in Qatar every year with stress said to contribute to a majority of the deaths, media in the Himalayan country said Tuesday.
Heart attacks, suicide, industrial accidents and drowning were the causes of the deaths in a country that hosts 350,000 Nepalese workers, according to a report prepared by the Nepalese embassy in the Gulf nation based on information gathered from Qatar hospitals.
'Two-third of the deaths are caused by stress because they are cheated by employment agencies,' Nepalese Ambassador Suryanath Mishra said.
Mishra said his embassy receives about 20 complaints each day from Nepalese victims of such fraud and that about 10 Nepalese return to their home country each day from Qatar because of such scams.

very sad, the kingdom does not to take action against such agencies
no Merci those article and shit are all media thing to be on market . i am an Asian and my nationality is Nepali i have never seen those pathetic things on our Nepali community. our country might be male dominated but they ain't such low scum to sale there daughters and sister for money and talking about alcohol and drugs where in the planet we can't find drug abuser and drinkers? you are such a materialistic hope you don't have a heart made up plastic. And don't manifest anything that hurt the pride of a human.
Qatar and other countries have been employing people from Asia/Far East or wherever for years and years.
They hire in the main cheap labour and they (cheap labour) make themselves available.
I am not saying for one moment that abuse is acceptable.
However, people (from these countries) go back and speak of their experiences and how ‘bad’ or ‘good’ and yet they still apply for jobs over here; some lie on their CV’s to get here.
So, what is it that keeps the sub continents/developing nations come back here?
As a Westerner, I can honestly say our qualifications and our expertise mean something over here; after all, and let’s be honest and not to be PC about this, Westerners are employed here in management positions because our qualifications still count.
If it is so bad over here and let’s face it with mobile phones, MSN, Skype and other mediums of communication; it is very easy to let people know how ‘bad’ it is; so why do they still keep coming back.
Do they honestly think it will get better for them or are they happy they are out of their miserable lives in the hope this will help them.
I don’t know the answer but what I do know is this; if it is so bad, abusive and detrimental to your human rights; why do you then encourage others to come here?
If I hated a place or was treated in a bad way I would never encourage anybody to join in.

no Nepalese ,no Labor supply Co : :P
hamada, they will get those diseases from proper alcohol if abused too.
Besides, even if they were allowed to buy it, they wouldn't be able to afford it.
The whole situation is totally messed up, in every way.
They won't be treated for Alcoholism for sure, but what about liver, pancreas, kidney diseases..etc caused by domestic made alcohol ?
whyte, as I said, it is something I read. It was in the time out magazine of GT a few days ago. Other than that I have no knowledge of the subject.
BUT, the suicide of Nepalis in Qatar is nothing new. This I heard about already a few years ago. People seem to wonder why it is particularly the Nepalis who seem to be afflicted so much that they commit suicide more than other people. Again, I have no statistics or personal knowledge of this, it is just what people are and have been talking about, plus the article I mentioned...which may or may not shed light on the apparent mystery.
Thousands of Nepali workers come to India every year and I must say I never heard or seen anyone of them with a booze problem.. I have met only a few but I didn't hear about it either..
hamada, yes and no. Yes, because it is only fair. No, because if they are indeed alcoholics, things will only get worse. Even if the amount allowed is regulated, an alcoholic will do what he needs to do to get more . Plus, I somehow doubt that Qatar will offer treatment to a non national alcoholic.
I'd prefer if they were given permits and access to proper distilled/undistilled beverages as it may save the state a lot of money (medical treatment) and save lives.
I have read an article that stated that there is a "caste" in Nepal, sorry, can't recall the name, that is very poor, I read that some fathers sell their daughters into "slavery" for about 25USD a year. It also said that said fathers then drink away the money. Apparently alcohol dependency is quite widespread in that particular community. I wonder if there might be a problem with alcohol amongst some Nepalis here? As they can't afford to buy it or have no permission to do so, maybe they are consuming dangerous liquids that then cause harm like hallucinations etc? Which then may cause then do die or kill themselves?
Just a something I was contemplating.
useless
this is so sad...geez, it's stereotypical third world misery. there's just no way of getting used to it no matter how many cases there are all over the world.
it's not simply about money. it's more of hopes and dreams for a better life and actually making real, honest effort to achieve them that kills these people when these dreams are destroyed in the worst possible ways.
hamadaCZ you said it...... as long everything is well for them, why should they care.... life is good ....
they have forgotten or never learned :
you treat others , the way you like to be treated !!!!
Something I have noticed about some of the locals on forums and on the Radio, which applies to Arabs in general, they are in constant denial of facts like maids mistreatment, snobbish attitude, reckless driving...etc
The gulf countries are still at a very primitive stage when it comes to social welfare and human rights.
I still don’t totally understand if this situation results from the sudden and enormous influx of money combined with greed and limited education and vision (from those in charge) or if it’s in fact a deliberate and convenient negligence!
All systematic (not casual and seldom) behavior can be conditioned by policies, their enforcement and tight control.
In the GCC young nations, all these concepts are unknown and/or surreal, as they are still perceived as not bringing any direct benefit for the "special ones".
sorry for the harsh words but, sadder than this precarious reality, is to realize that the local authorities (often praised almost as gods) fail to do their job and govern their country with social welfare, labor law and human rights seen in other developed countries in the XXI century.
Priorities here are just shifted elsewhere. Harrods represents much more glamour than the poor labors that are shipped around to our convenience!
Third world in its best, aka the power of money, loads of it and limited education.
Who said "start thinking"!?
Look who is talking ...Saudis
Woooooow ..i think if there is a place for the unbelievables it must be KSA .
Not two third, I think it is more...likely to be three fourth.
@lobot: funny but very sad to hear
Oh my gosh, I am from Germany (smile) .... and I think I will die of stress here as well , if I don't get away soon...... all that oppression , injustice and poor customer service here , sigh
because of money they ruin ones life...
lol lobot !
a nepali man tried to explain the doctors on what happen to his nepali friend who committed suicide.
he said i saw my friend in the room same same lipton which he means hanging...
Very True Brit. Which the authorities of the origin should be taking care of.Now, after all these what they get here is the question,it starts from 600 QR.
Sadly, the biggest abusers are the agencies in their own homelands..
I had first hand experience of an Agent in pakistan, who too the air tickets sent by the company, but made the workers pay for them and then sign a paper saying that they had received them..
I am sure the same types of scams occur in India, Bangladesh, Nepal etc.
Most of the issues can easily be sorted , IF the authorities are serious. None cares...
"Two-third of the deaths are caused by stress because they are cheated by employment agencies"
THIS IS THE TRUE
genesis, is that another "student survey?" :)
Agreed ....
minimum wage here? nah! companies pay peanuts to cut their expenses, these people are getting sick and some die working their butts off and in the end get little or nothing for the services they rendered.
Locals on a popular local internet forum, doubt the authenticity of the ambassador claims and suggests that the main reason for death might be of the Nepalese heavy drinking attitude of locally produced alcohol unfit for human consumption !
Im not sure if this story was picked up by any of the local dailies and whether any local officials would comment on the ambassador claims
Regardless of the cause of death, the numbers are alarming
Yes, I know a lot of them suffer stress, but to speculate about the root cause of that stress to plug the fact that some get ripped off is mocking the dead.
the sad part is the employment agencies in Nepal are the ones scamming their own people for the sake of money.
is there any minimum wages system for labors in Qatar???
or
is it the choice of a company owner to pay the peanuts???
I met a guy in Saudi, who was near suicide because of being cheated by employment agency..
He had paid money to get there and and had been promised a good salary plus overtime. when he arrived, he found that the Arabic contract he was made to sign was for half what he had been promised and no overtime. he spent the first 14 months just paying back the monies he had borrowed..
He was depressed and suicidal.. luckily, we clubbed together to pay off his money and got him a ticket home..
Sadly, too many such cases... :O(
this issue has to stop tsk!
Saudi should take a good look at themselves before running articles like this.
"Two-third of the deaths are caused by stress because they are cheated by employment agencies"
This has to be pure speculation!
down from a tree early morning
was creepy
