Another Brit in trouble in Dubai :O(

A British holidaymaker has been charged with indecency in Dubai after walking through the world's largest shopping centre in a bikini.

The woman was buying clothes and gifts in the Dubai Mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'.

The pair then became embroiled in a heated row in front of hundreds of bemused shoppers.

Incensed by the Arabic woman's comments, the British woman told her to 'mind her own business' before stripping out of her clothes and 'taunting' the locals by walking around in only her bikini, it is alleged.

The mall's security team then intervened and called the police, who arrested the British holidaymaker.
The woman, whose identity is unknown, was still being questioned by officers in Bur Dubai police station last night.
A source within Dubai police said: 'The British woman was wearing a very low top and most of her legs were on display.
'The Arabic woman stopped to criticise her and that's when she stripped off. That's when things started to get out of hand.
'We ended up questioning both women after receiving a call from the mall security staff.'
There are numerous signs around the Dubai Mall urging women to 'wear respectful clothing-Similar messages are flashed up on LCD screens in most shopping malls across the United Arab Emirates.

I notice a few comments state that the dress culture of various countries ought to be respected by others. Why,then,is there so much outrage when European countries are unhappy at women wearing full body covering? It is not pleasant to see only a pair of eyes looking out at you,if they aren't hidden behind dark glasses. As humans, facial expressions are a vital part of communication.

Before any one jumps on the racist theme,I am not remotely racist, and I do respect the dress code here.

We have no right to intervene individuals freedom..but having said that..it is an important responsibility of a person to respect the customs / tradition of the host country where he or she live in....one final one brit...do you have a pic of that girl by any chance?? huh?

she was at the end of her vacation or something and may have been anyways on her way out since she was buying clothes and gifts. Perhaps she was feeling particularly testy as well..whatever reason she should have controlled herself.Wasn't worth getting a criminal record over such disputes now was it?

by the idea of locals accosting people in public for behavior or dress. If the woman didn't like it, she should have gone to security in the first place instead of taking it upon herself to be the "decency policewoman".

I think the local lady was totally out of order - how dare she impose HER standards on this British woman. "...accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'." THAT is judgemental on the part of the local woman - there is no reference to any other person stopping or interfering with this British woman so I have to infer from that that the local woman created an unnecessary confrontation because she imposed her own values NOT necessarly the values of the UAE on the British woman and the situation. This "lack of guidance" in terms of what is or is not acceptable has been the subject of other threads on QL and whilst for residents there is sensibility in our approach, for a tourist, how can it be anything other than a minefield!! If she had been buying clothing, I infer from that that the chances are she had been in the Mall some time - yet it would appear that neither security or the police or indeed ANYONE in authority chose to politely "have a word". Then out of nowhere, this Arabic woman starts criticising her for wearing "revealing clothing"!!! I agree that what follwed was crass and unnecessary and the British woman acted in an idiotic way in doing what she did but I also believe that the local woman is equally cullpable in creating an unnecessary confrontation in the first place. She was a holidaymaker for goodness sake NOT an expat worker with years under her belt in the region - I have absolutely no doubt that she felt she was perfectly at ease in her attire and that the verbal assault from the local woman was totally unjustified hence her action - which - I do conceive was misplaced and naive but given her experience of the Gulf which we are not made aware off, not entirely suprising. I hope that if this case comes to court that the authorities take a broader view than recent cases which DID concern Brits who had been in the Emirates some time and should have known much better.

"The woman was buying clothes and gifts in the Dubai Mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'. "

Perhaps the fault lies with both. She was fully dressed and probably thought that she was OK. It might have been better to walk away when accosted by the local lady.

both were stupid .the first one --should really mind her own business and if she doesn't know how to wear low cut clothes or not allowed to (probably she ever wanted)she should not object.what she will do at beach i wonder and who was she a moral teacher.

the second one -- should not have responded in such a bizarre way in a country where you have strange laws.
