Asians extremes to get Western look

CNN report:

Plastic surgery boom as Asians seek 'western' look

The definition of pretty, explains their plastic surgeon, is not the standard Asian face, but closer to a Caucasian face. Dr Kim Byung-gun is the head of Seoul, South Korea's biggest plastic surgery clinic, BK DongYang. The clinic is a dozen stories tall, with all of its operating rooms full on the day of Min kyong's surgery.

Dr Kim says his clinic, one of the most successful in a city dubbed the "plastic surgery capital of Asia," performs 100 surgeries a day, ranging from eyelid surgery to nose reshaping to facial contouring.

"The Chinese and Korean patients tell me that they want to have faces like Americans. The idea of beauty is more westernized recently. That means the Asian people want to have a little less Asian, more westernized appearance. They don't like big cheekbones or small eyes. They want to have big, bright eyes with slender, nice facial bones."

The surgeries, already popular among Koreans, are booming among newly rich, globally competitive, mainland Chinese, explains Dr Kim. About 30% of his patients are international and of that group, 90% are Chinese. It's why he speaks Mandarin and is partnering with two clinics in China.

plastic surgery is pretty common and generally accepted there these days. it's a fad to some, a way of buying self esteem to others. i've watched quite a few interviews of korean celebrities (both men & women) who are no longer ashamed to admit they had work done on their faces and tv programs would show their before and after images.

i don't know, maybe it's due to some sort of confucian upbringing that make them want to conform with whatever is trendy/ideal at the time. like learning english and getting second eyelids to get bigger round eyes. or copying their favorite movie star's lips. having them done on children is a little alarming though.

to make it more relevant to Qatar, the subject line must be "Only for Lebanese Girls" IMHO.

Asians girls have a soft round face with feminine features. Thai lady boys go through a lot of surgery and ingest handful of hormones (jeopardizing their life)to get those looks. World is crazy.

Guess it comes to personal choice ultimately but IMO no one does unless its to fix an unnatural disability.

Allah creation is perfect, but those who do not belive in Allah need the help of plastic surgeons?

If people but only realized that beauty is truly in the eyes of the beholder and what is beautiful for one will not always be beautiful for everyone. Besides there's so much awesome in being unique!

Western media is stronger, beauty is every where, these asians are not happy with what they have and this creats some kind of lack of confidence in themeslves.

happy, eating an animal or making it "look better" are two different things! God made the animals and plants as an energy source for the humans. But he made the humans as they are. Circumcision is a useless Jewish rite.

In Islam, circumcision is mentioned in some hadith (it is referred as Khitan), but NOT in the Qur'an!!

LP...but people who do not follow Qur'an also eat animals ..right. So the question is why would a human kill an animal when it is also a creation of God and if God does not make mistakes the animal also should be allowed to exist until it meets its end as per God's design.

We Christians got a pass on circumcision, along with the ban on eating pork. Christians also believe that Christ's sacrifice of himself negated the need for any further such sacrifices.

Anyway this is getting too religious for this thread. As I put up the OP, I am asking we keep the thread within bounds. Start a religious thread if you want.

By anonymous• 24 May 2011 08:22

And if it said, chop of your head, you would do it too, Uranus?

The religious text just says to do it as a sign of submission to God. Chopping off part of one's reproductive parts is about as submissive as you can get I suppose.

Uranus, if God is all knowing, and knowing best, I don't see any reason to change anything He created.

By anonymous• 24 May 2011 08:17
anonymous

Why, Uranus. Did the 'All-knowing' make a mistake on purpose?

By Uranus1• 24 May 2011 08:17

LP the difference is that there is a religious text to which the faithful can point that clearly states God expects circumcision.

There is no text in which God says to get a nose job.

"From my prespective belief point of view, those people who want to change their look are not satisfied with the way God created them, people must know that what God decided for them is the best thing for them."

I agree, SA. That's why I think circumcision done in a young age is also changing the creator's design. If he would have wanted it, he would have made men like this. Why do people fumble with God's creation?

I totally agree Straight Arrow. My belief also is that such extreme actions as those described in the story are offensive to God as our Creator.

What is worse in this case is that PARENTS are doing it to their children. What sort of message does this send to a child when her parents what surgery to make her look 'prettier' or sound 'better'? Absolutely terrible.

Sad reflection on our world today. I suppose the media has a major part to play in this with the glamourization and adulation of certain body types and features.

who want to change their look have a lack of confidence in themselves or what they have it is pshycology problem.

It is all becaue of the media effect, the solution for this problem is simple, people must be confident in them selves and must know that they are created in the perfect way which makes them better than others.

From my prespective belief point of view, those people who want to change their look are not satisfied with the way God created them, people must know that what God decided for them is the best thing for them.

I found this to be very surprising if not a little disturbing. As a white Western male, it's not something I had ever noticed or really thought about.

This extract from the story was most worrying:

A global ideal doesn't stop at the face, says dental surgeon Jung Hak. Dr Jung says he's been fighting a trend. Korean mothers who have been bringing in their toddlers to have the muscle under the tongue that connects it to the bottom of the mouth surgically snipped.

The belief, explains Dr Jung, is that it will help a Korean speak English more clearly. People from the Asia Pacific region have difficulty in pronouncing the "L" sound, says Dr Jung. But he calls the surgery, if it's only for pronunciation, misguided, and caused by the hyper-competitive drive in Korea.
