Who Is Michael the Archangel?

ACCORDING to the Bible, there are millions of angelic creatures inhabiting the spirit realm. (Daniel 7:9, 10; Revelation 5:11) From beginning to end, the Scriptures make hundreds of references to the angels that remain loyal to God. Yet, only two of these spirit creatures are mentioned by name. One is the angel Gabriel, who personally delivered messages from God to three different individuals over a period of some 600 years. (Daniel 9:20-22; Luke 1:8-19, 26-28) The other angel mentioned by name in the Bible is Michael.

Michael is clearly an outstanding angel. For example, in the book of Daniel, Michael is described as fighting wicked demons in behalf of Jehovah’s people. (Daniel 10:13; 12:1) In the inspired letter of Jude, Michael confronts Satan in a dispute over Moses’ body. (Jude 9) The book of Revelation shows that Michael wars with Satan and his demons and hurls them out of heaven. (Revelation 12:7-9) No other angel is portrayed as having such great power and authority over God’s enemies. It is no wonder, then, that the Bible appropriately refers to Michael as “the archangel,” the prefix “arch” meaning “chief,” or “principal.”

The Controversy Over Michael’s Identity

Christendom’s religions, as well as Judaism and Islam, have conflicting ideas on the subject of angels. Some explanations are vague. For instance, The Anchor Bible Dictionary states: “There may be a single superior angel and/or a small group of archangels (usually four or seven).” According to The Imperial Bible-Dictionary, Michael is the “name of a superhuman being, in regard to whom there have in general been two rival opinions, either that he is the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, or that he is one of the so-called seven archangels.”

In Jewish tradition these seven archangels are Gabriel, Jeremiel, Michael, Raguel, Raphael, Sariel, and Uriel. On the other hand, Islam believes in four archangels, namely, Jibril, Mikal, Izrail, and Israfil. Catholicism also believes in four archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel. What does the Bible say? Are there several archangels?

The Bible’s Answer

Aside from Michael, no archangel is mentioned in the Bible, nor do the Scriptures use the term “archangel” in the plural. The Bible describes Michael as the archangel, implying that he alone bears that designation. Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that Jehovah God has delegated to one, and only one, of his heavenly creatures full authority over all other angels.

Aside from the Creator himself, only one faithful person is spoken of as having angels under subjection—namely, Jesus Christ. (Matthew 13:41; 16:27; 24:31) The apostle Paul made specific mention of “the Lord Jesus” and “his powerful angels.” (2 Thessalonians 1:7) And Peter described the resurrected Jesus by saying: “He is at God’s right hand, for he went his way to heaven; and angels and authorities and powers were made subject to him.”—1 Peter 3:22.

While there is no statement in the Bible that categorically identifies Michael the archangel as Jesus, there is one scripture that links Jesus with the office of archangel. In his letter to the Thessalonians, the apostle Paul prophesied: “The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice and with God’s trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16) In this scripture Jesus is described as having assumed his power as God’s Messianic King. Yet, he speaks with “an archangel’s voice.” Note, too, that he has the power to raise the dead.

While on earth as a human, Jesus performed several resurrections. In doing so, he used his voice to utter commanding calls. For example, when resurrecting the dead son of a widow in the city of Nain, he said: “Young man, I say to you, Get up!” (Luke 7:14, 15) Later, just before resurrecting his friend Lazarus, Jesus “cried out with a loud voice: ‘Lazarus, come on out!’” (John 11:43) But on these occasions, Jesus’ voice was the voice of a perfect man.

After his own resurrection, Jesus was raised to a “superior position” in heaven as a spirit creature. (Philippians 2:9) No longer a human, he has the voice of an archangel. So when God’s trumpet sounded the call for “those who are dead in union with Christ” to be raised to heaven, Jesus issued “a commanding call,” this time “with an archangel’s voice.” It is reasonable to conclude that only an archangel would call “with an archangel’s voice.”

Yes, there are other angelic creatures of high rank, such as seraphs and cherubs. (Genesis 3:24; Isaiah 6:2) Yet, the Scriptures point to the resurrected Jesus Christ as the chief of all angels—Michael the archangel.

Wouldnt assuming that Jesus is the archangel Michael actually be blasphamy?

Jesus is part of the trinity in Christianity, and by saying he called with the "voice of an archangel" doesnt make him one. When someone is referred to as yelling with "the roar of a lion" doesnt make him a lion.

I think you are trying to make some "DaVinci Code" revelation but it lacks common sense.

Why you say that this is the only way we can have the trueth and not by being racionals?

I regret to inform you but i don't belive in the God written on the Bible, like in all other holly Books, God is too Human and imperfect.

I am a spiritist, from our point of view, Angels and Archangels belong to the spirits classe nearest to God's perfection, everybody gives names to the Angels, why would it be different for the authors of the Bible, once they were humans as us.

Jesus was also a spirit but not an Angel or Archangel

maybe you wrote this comment while I'm replying Labda06's comment.

But you can read as well what the Bible says regarding Jesus Christ.

Kindly Read the Bible in John 20:1-17. Try to absorb by yourself what Jesus told about Mary Mag´da·lene.

Cause for me... I want to serve and worship the God of Jesus christ. I am pretty sure you wanted to worship the true God as well.

If you wanted to have more proof from the Bible you can read the context in John 14:23,24 : "23 In answer Jesus said to him: “If anyone loves me, he will observe my word, and my Father will love him, and we shall come to him and make our abode with him. 24 He that does not love me does not observe my words; and the word that YOU are hearing is not mine, but belongs to the Father who sent me."

You can read as well, in your own Bible, what Jesus said right after the above qoute, in John 14:28 : "YOU heard that I said to YOU, I am going away and I am coming [back] to YOU. If YOU loved me, YOU would rejoice that I am going my way to the Father, because the Father is greater than I am."

The only question is: If Jesus is the God to be worship by all mankind, why Jesus wanted us to worship his God?

too far, yet been given to be understood by men with the guidance of god himself...

as what you said, unless the bible says directly that michael is christ, everything is but the works of the human understanding...

but it is not mentioned directly, so would you say that it has been under errors too? or we only have different understanding of it?

the only clear is that one name above every other name in christian faith, that is jesus...

and as per scriptures, michael was categorically described as an archangel, no more no less and it is also one of the highest title bestowed on god's creation but no higher than god himself. but the name of jesus was considered in the most high above everything to the same level as god himself for he is not god's creation but his one being and that being was not michael... but jesus christ himself.

the only link that you may seen between the two is but the works of human understanding that you already agreed far from god's, well how close is it then that in you already made a conclusion (as what you said, "Yet, the Scriptures point to the resurrected Jesus Christ as the chief of all angels—Michael the archangel") or would it be proper to say that it might be, but who knows? god knows and for us humans, the only thing we may know with full true understanding is what god and scriptures tell us and left us to believed in (in christian faith)...

the name jesus is the name above every other name.

maybe more (than my understanding), but would definitely not be less (than what human does understand)... ^_^

nb: i guess this would be my last... for it isn't proper to argue somehow about religion coz anyone has right to be in their respective faith. peace everyone! ^_^

I am very sory to Blog this Article. But if this is non-sense as such..then what non-sense you consider be meaning for you? Is it for being immoral? a gambler? a thief and more?

As I mentioned before... it is not my own idea what the article say's about. It is come from the Words of God. The only thing we have to do is to read the context from the Bible which are clearly mentioned on this article before we say this is non-sense.

Jehovah God wanted us to know him better... so why we dont start to know his Son?

Jehovah God is not equal to his Son Jesus Christ. Even Christ Jesus did not claim as a God to be worship.

Please read John 20:11-18: : "11 Mary, however, kept standing outside near the memorial tomb, weeping. Then, while she was weeping, she stooped forward to look into the memorial tomb 12 and she viewed two angels in white sitting one at the head and one at the feet where the body of Jesus had been lying. 13 And they said to her: “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them: “They have taken my Lord away, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 After saying these things, she turned back and viewed Jesus standing, but she did not discern it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her: “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” She, imagining it was the gardener, said to him: “Sir, if you have carried him off, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her: “Mary!” Upon turning around, she said to him, in Hebrew: “Rab·bo´ni!” (which means “Teacher!”) 17 Jesus said to her: “Stop clinging to me. For I have not yet ascended to the Father. But be on your way to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and YOUR Father and to my God and YOUR God.’” 18 Mary Mag´da·lene came and brought the news to the disciples: “I have seen the Lord!” and that he said these things to her."

I respect about your comment and I really appreciate your concern. The blog was made base on the Bible's theory and you can read all the context as a proof.

Did you read all of the context which is clearly mentioned in this article? It will help you to understand the article was all about...

Bible is the only Book(s) that was given from the Most High Person to the mankind. Bible is also known as a God's Words. 2Timothy 3:16,17 say's: "All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness, that the man of God may be fully competent, completely equipped for every good work."

What does it means?

The Author of this Book(s) is Powerful. He is the Most-High God. His name is Jehovah. (Psalms 83:18)

Do you really belive that The Author of The Bible will let the Bible change through years by conqueror? Do you really belive that The Author of The Bible is not doing anything to keep his Words, 100% accurate, up to this very momment?

just at thought...

i think if michael would be referred to as jesus christ, then michael as per christian belief would mean a god? for he (christ) has been categorically considered as one. though it is referred to in scriptures of christian beliefs as said above that indeed he would "descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice..." would mean the same as a being already? i think not.

it would be proper to say and with a common sense that if god is god he would also has the power of any archangel whereas an archangel would still be an angel regardless to a certain point that god has given him authority or power.

for what i knew in christian faith that only one name has given authority over things than the name of jesus christ, it's but by god an angel would have an authority or power, henceforth no angel nor an archangel would be in the same spiritual level as of god or jesus himself.

so as christ may become michael in any form, but michael an archangel, nor any other angels with such authority and power would never be christ... for he is as per the faith the only one's favored in the most high... for no angel in any authority nor power would take that place and assumed it's name for it'll mean that doing so would no longer be considered an angel... what more an arch.

michael the archangel was mentioned in scriptures in that way and there's no appropriate term to best describe him than that for i think people wrote those scritures knows well what's god and what's an angel in the first place that's why they make it that way and in the course of time accepted it the same way.

so let's leave god for being god and angels for angels where it should belong, for only god not angels may know the truth in the end.

^_^

66 Books of compilation which is known as The Bible. You can find Samuel as one of the writer under his own Name: First Samuel and Second Samuel. (the 9th and 10th books from the old testament)

In Second Peter Chapter 1, verse 19 and 20 (2Peter 1:19,20), the true God Jehovah use people here in earth to write his words yet in 2Timothy 3:16 say's: All Scripture is Inspired of God.

Please advise the evidence from the Bible which we can proof, Samuel was an angel.

Do not try to translate Holy Bible directly word by word.

Jesus and Michael are not one and the same.

“The Lord himself will descend from heaven with a commanding call, with an archangel’s voice and with God’s trumpet, and those who are dead in union with Christ will rise first.”

This can be translated in many ways actually.

And remember that Bible is the most cencored book af all times and today's version doesn't probably have 75% of the original.

If you're looking for a problem, you're probably gonna find one.
