Britain to cut 500,000 public sector jobs
Nearly half a million public sector workers in Britain are to lose their jobs as the government plans to reduce more than 80 billion pounds in public spending in the next four years, the biggest cut since the Second World War.
Danny Alexander, chief secretary to the Treasury, unwittingly disclosed the full scale of the expected redundancies when he was photographed Monday reading confidential briefing papers, The Daily Telegraph reported.
The "restricted" documents said: "The OBR's (Office for Budget Responsibility) budget forecast was for a reduction in public sector workforce numbers of 490,000 by 2014-15.
"This is likely to change as a result of settlements agreed in the Spending Review but government expects the OBR's November forecast to be broadly in line with its budget forecast. It will be for each public sector employer to determine the workforce implications of spending settlements."
Tens of thousands of government officials will be offered redundancy in the coming weeks as the government plans to cut more than 80 billion pounds in public spending over the next four years, the documents said. Public sector workers will also have a two-year pay freeze and be told that they face increased pension contributions from next year.
Chancellor George Osborne will announce the outcome of the government's Comprehensive Spending Review Wednesday.
The Telegraph also revealed that ministers will announce more than 13 billion pounds in welfare cuts. In total, including cuts announced in the emergency budget, the welfare bill will be reduced by about 25 billion pounds in the next four years.
Under the review plan, every government department - except health and international development - has to undertake budget cuts of up to 40 percent by 2015. It is thought that the budgets of the Home Office and Justice Department will be particularly hard hit.
Like I said I have no problem with the Eastern Europeans or other immigrant workers, at least they work, but they are getting benefits, in the form of housing, schooling, health care, for which they contribute, but they also send some money back home.
As long as they contribute and they do, both by work and taxes, I have no problem.
But as you say the UK pop is Lazy, so give them the jobs that you and i do not and will not do in order to get their benefit. Unfortunate downside is this would remove jobs from the Eastern Europeans and other immigrants.
Unfortunately no government of the UK will ever scrap the current welfare state and restart, cos they would never get into power again, and the next party that got in would cancel all the plans to remain popular.
Get your facts right.
These Polish, Romanian people do the shit jobs that you and i do not do and will not do. I wonder when did the Govt. start giving out benefits to eastern european people who work. It is the UK population that has become lazy.
Latest facts for you.
"A fifth of Britons live in households where nobody works, according to official figures.
They reveal that almost four million households contain no one who has a job – meaning more than seven million under-65s live without any experience of employment".
So its up to us to change.
and expect them in doha soon...
and you give us a US website. go away.
God save the queen ;]
more unemployable bureaucrats whom they won't get tax from and will have to pay benefit to for the rest of their lives.
How will the UK get out of debt, they make nothing to export, they employ eastern europeans (nothing wrong with that) who get benefits and send money out of the UK. So there is an ever diminishing amout of money cirulating, with fewer tax payers and more benefit claims. Does the cut in benefit take into account the 500,000 unemployed ?
Guess they'll have to sell Buck House, Westminster Palace, Tower Bridge and Windsor to the Qatari's.
Is the UK doomed forever.
a 25% budget cut? :(
About time.. The public sector is bloated and too costly.
