Interesting point about Hindi not having a word for 'DIVORCE'. But as tinker pointed out, there are many more languages than 'hindi' for 'hindus'. (Lets hope the spellings dont mislead people :-p) . In fact, from a strictly theological point of view it is Sanskrit thts the language in which the texts have been written not Hindi.

Which lead me to look for words for Divorce in Sanskrit and this is what I found. Should say this is new to me too, but the words sound oddly familiar.

1. Divorce: Parityagah ( N ); Vivahavichhedah ( N )

Vivahalopah ( N )

(Pari+Tyaj ( v.t. 1 PP )

Vivaham Lopaya ( causal or Prayojak of Lup, 10 PP ))

2. Divorcee (Male & Female called)

*** Parityaktah ( N, M ); Parityakta ( N F )

3. Re-marriage of the divorcee.

*** Punar+Bhoo ( 1 PP ) >>>>>>>>Punarbhooh ( N F & M )

Punar+Vaha ( 1PP )>>>>>>>>>Punaroodah ( N M ), Punaroodha ( N)

A search for the etymology of 'Divorce'tells me that the word has its origins around 14th century. Wonder what it was called before that!

(late 14c., from O.Fr. divorce (14c.), from L. divortium "separation, dissolution of marriage," from divertere "to separate, leave one's husband, turn aside" (see divert). Not distinguished in English from legal separation until mid-19c. The verb is late 14c., from O.Fr. divorcer)

can get divorced in the UK - it has become 'acceptable' but not ideal.

You cannot however re marry and have a full Catholic wedding service; you can only have a civil wedding ceremony and in the ‘eyes of the Catholic Church’ that is not recognised. You may (rarely) find a sympathetic Priest who allows you a blessing.

If the marriage is annulled that is a different matter.

In Arab countries does one have to legally register for divorce ? If not, than how can one obtain the official recordings about the number of divorce cases in these countries. Certainly the above data is not based on hearsay, or is it ?.

Alter Dusty.com I did not say Religion its self but the pressures of Culture in this part of the world which is governed by religion!

Most of the men in this part of the world prefer women who have not been married before compared to the divorced one. Yes and you should also keep you big mouth shut if you don't understand. I was responding to Kareena74 and not you!

I'm not talking about that. I am talking about when the Lords in consultation with the CofE finally got rid of any remaining blasphemy laws.

The law against the defamation of religions is a different peace of legislation.

By anonymous• 24 May 2011 08:33

Uranus, it's a law against the "defamation of religions". It doesn't mean that religions have a legal status with legal consequences.

Marriages based on a religious law are not legally binding in Europe. Marriage is a legal contract and can be terminated as such. You marry in an office. Marrying in church is an option for the 'romantic', but it has no legal consequences!

Islam is the only religion that permits divorce.. Other than that as far as I understand, no other religion permits divorce. The Catholic church does not for sure and as far as Hinduism is concerned, there isn't even an equivalent word in Hindi for divorce and they are using the Arabic/Urdu word Talaaq.. Islam does not encourage divorce though, in fact it is the most disliked among the halaal things in the eyes of God but it is allowed nevertheless under irrepairable circumstances.. But unfortunately, people do not understand that and they take undue advantage of this clause in the Islamic law.

Buddhism does not permit remarriage, it's just that the modern laws implemented in Buddhist, Hindu countries that permit divorce and remarriage..just a correction.

Interesting post...so SL figured in at #34? Not surprising given the rise in divorces back there in the recent years. However its not always easy for a Lankan woman to remarry. Nothing to do with religion though since Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam all permit remarriage for both men and women. The difficulty is due to the stigma attached to divorcees, specially those with kids, due to the lack of broadmindedness and biases in our societies. However Inshallah things seem to be improving since of late which is a relief. People are getting more streetwise and up to date..even the older generation. No longer are people willing to put up with messed up marriages due to social pressure. And many more are remarrying too!

But I have noticed something.. Just not in Qatar but even in my own country.. Once a woman gets divorced, it is often very easy to remarry.. But it is the most difficult to get married the first time.. It is like this, if you start the cycle once and you get it going, then you might stumble on a stone but somehow you get past it and continue your journey but till the time you start, you are stuck at the Start point..

Qatar's divorce rate is artificially low, because it only takes into account people who divorce in Qatar--i.e. not the expats with family here or the legions of expat workers whose families are in their home countries. When taking this into account, Qatar has one of the highest rates in the world along with other GCC countries.

I am surprised at the figures, because a similar table from the UN puts Russia and the communist block countries at the top.

You ask about Qatar - Well the simple answer is that society here is changing and women are now being more assertive. This is leading to breaking of old cultural stigmas and divorce is on the rise.

Having said that, the same reasoning could be used in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc.
