GUANGZHOU, Oct.21 (Xinhua) -- A Chinese toddler who was hit by two vehicles on a market street and subsequently ignored by 18 passersby died in the hospital on Friday, doctors said. Her death triggered a nationwide wave of mourning, as the incident has been closely followed by people who are concerned about a seeming lack of morality in Chinese society.

Two-year-old Wang Yue died of brain failure at the General Hospital of the Guangzhou Military Command in south China's Guangdong Province at 12:32 a.m., doctors said.

Wang had been in critical condition since she was checked in the hospital last Friday.

The girl's death ranked as the day's most popular topic on Sina Weibo, a popular Chinese microblogging site, garnering over 1.9 million posts within hours. Many microbloggers decried the apathy and cruelty of the drivers and those who walked by Wang after she was hit by the vehicles.

The public came to know Wang on Oct. 13, when a surveillance video showing her being hit by two vehicles and left to bleed on a market street in the city of Foshan was posted online.

The video shows 18 pedestrians and cyclists walking by the bleeding toddler without stopping to help. The 19th pedestrian, a migrant woman collecting trash, pulled her to the side of the street and alerted the girl's mother.

Internet users responded to the video in great number, criticizing the drivers and passersby, passing along messages calling for more "good Samaritans" and vowing to give a helping hand to anyone in need.

Many even donated money for Wang's medical treatment. Local media reported that her father received 270,100 yuan (42,468 U.S. dollars) as of Thursday. Some were offered by kindergarten students, while other donations were sent by Chinese people living in Australia and Thailand.

The incident has left many people to wonder if China's rapid economic development has had an effect on ethics and morality in the general public.

Wang Yang, a top official from Guangdong, told a high-level provincial meeting that the tragedy should be a "wake-up call" for society and that such incidents should not be allowed to occur again.

"We should look into the ugliness in ourselves with a dagger of conscience and bite the soul-searching bullet," he said.

It's similar in China TB. Also, when you get used to seeing poor people in various states of health (including children) lying or sitting in the street, you tend to learn to ignore it, as the paying attention to it, especially when there is nothing you can do, is too mentally strenuous.

It's called desensitization. This is a pretty graphic example, but there are loads of cases in China, India, the US and other hugely populated areas of people walking by dead bodies for days, weeks, and in a case I read the other day YEARS!!! We aren't meant to live in such huge populations.

I had posted something on other similar thread which could be construed as in support of the reaction of people who were there keeping in view the law or rules in place to punish people who attempt to help a victim...however until then I wasn't able to see the video...came back home late in the night from work and watched it...wanted to post to retract my comments but was numbed at what I saw... since it came up in the form of this thread today, would just say reaction of people was inhumane and completely unacceptable, irrespective. Just wish this world atleast have time to stop by at such times to make us feel that we still are human.

May Allah grant the little one paradise..Aameen. I for one feel relieved that she didn't live to suffer any lifetime complications such accidents can cause, and that she never had to go back into the same society where such stone hearted people reside.

The Chinese need to wake up to the obvious moral and social issues prevailing among some of their countrymen.Such a tragedy occurring even once is too much to be ignored.

The morons who left her to die need to look within themselves and as how they would feel if it was their child ..

Now high time for one. After Tunisia, Egypt and the ongoing revolutions in Syria and Yemen it is time that they bring democracy, human rights, respect and tolerance for other religions and followings to china. Time to free the oppresed and suppressed chinese people from the evil communists and their wicked policies

It is time for a chinese revolution.

Its so disgusting how civilized people could allow this things to happen to a helpless little girl. People have become so greedy, so selfish and more interested in themselves which reflects very badly on their upbringing and society too.
