Portuguese traditional music "Fado"

Platao36
By Platao36

"Despite all these visible traces, for me there is still no better indication of the Arab contribution to Portuguese life than what can be heard in a long and heartfelt fado. Although its modern form is urban and it developed, as we know it, only in the 19th century, it is increasingly performed throughout the towns of Algarve, albeit largely for tourists.

Fado is perhaps most appropriately performed at night. Then, when a fadista pours out her soul to remind us of all we cannot know, cannot control, cannot understand our love, our histories inevitably recalls for me the gripping, expansive longs of the Arabs who once called this land home, and whose influences remain today."

Two days ago i posted about the Arab heritage at Portugal.
Picking up on same site i copy/paste the above partial text, to all my Qatari/non Qatari friends from QL, i decided to post some links with Fado. If you like these links, search for Amalia Rodrigues and Alfredo Marceneiro at youtube.

yes Dulce Pontes is one most recognized singers of portuguese tradicional music. She also recorded an albun with Enio Morricone, you might enjoy it!

Dulce Pontes, is this name familiar to you? I like her, she sings in native Portuguese, it sounds Spanish to my ears, sometimes.

She paired up with Italian Andrea Bocelli in "O Mare e Tu", she grabbed my attention ever since.

Great post.

O Fado nasceu um dia,

quando o vento mal bulia

e o céu o mar prolongava,

na amurada dum veleiro,

no peito dum marinheiro

que, estando triste, cantava,

que, estando triste, cantava.

The Fado was born one day,

when the wind barely blowed

and the sky extended the sea ,

on the side of a sailboat,

inside the chest of a sailor

that being sad, sang,

that being sad, sang

You can find a modern version of it in:

you are right, there is not a straight line between portuguese and arab people, but we certainly share a lot, including language!

Imagine how would it be possible to have arab culture for 400 years, and not have genetic heritage in our days...

In a recent visit to doha, I grew my beard, and everebody would speak to me in arabic... people were hard to believe I wasn't arab.

besides that, just until 500 to 300 years ago we might have kept some genetic and cultural exchange as we had a continuous trading presence in Barhain and Oman, just before the british assumed a stronger presence.

Well, returning to the first message: fado and tradicional arab music, at least they both share the several time repetitions of the same frase in different tones, and the same kind of voice. They are in deed very similar, as result of 400 years of arab culture under bagdad califa and then cordoba califa.

Portuguese are a certainly a unique blend, celtic, romans, visigods, arabs, african, south american, indian and far east.

Abraços!

Peace upon you.

A liberdade aqui (no forum e no pais), e' condicionada.

"Poor is the man whose pleasures depend on the permission of another."
