I read in the Peninsular that Qatar was placed at 136th place in some sore of "Freedom of the Press" awards.
For some reason it never appeared in the Gulf Times (not on-line) anyway. Was it in the printed version or is there some reason that the GT couldn't print it?
In fact the UK was well down the list too in the 30's or 40's.
As an aside, years ago there was a new darts team that wanted to be called "The Guinless" but the GT said that it was too close to "Guinness" so they called themselves "The Toucans". They did however allow Chucking Farmers and Pheasant Pluckers much to the dismay of QBS who regularly slipped up when reporting the results, especially when they played each other.
Try saying something bad about the Royal family Qatari and we'll see if it gets in the papers ;). But yes, freedom of the press is better than most places in the Middle East, like I said the Emir doesn't strictly enforce it.
It was in the print copy of one of the two papers...not sure which one.
Also, press freedom in Qatar is pretty strong if you take into account that there is no Minister of Information (like other arab countries) and that fact that they have Al Jazeera
There's technically no press freedom in Qatar, but I don't think the Emir strictly enforces it. The GT's has run stuff against the labour camps and other things. They probably just never got the press release.

Im not sure bcos they may have changed. But arent there special laws protecting the crown in the UK too?
