Smoking in city centre mall - anecdote

By iansmoo

Heard this anecdote from a Portugeese man last month.

"I was in the city centre mall at the coffee shop on the right hand side of the entrance, Costa Coffee, when I saw a man smoking. I asked him is it okay to smoke in here, I see the no smoking signs ? Come and sit with me, take a cigarrette the man said, I will pay your fine if the police catch us. The man smoked two cigarrettes and left." Smoking in malls is not allowed and the offenders clearly know it but continue to ignore it, meanwhile people turn a blind eye and our children breath in cancer causing smoke through passive smoking. There is also a risk of causing a fire.

and a guy in thobe was smoking with his chair back behind a wall/post.

Above him, a BIG "No smoking" sign can be seen but still this guy is oblivious. I was so tempted to take his picture but I might get into trouble...sighs.

People just doesn't care....I'm a smoker myself but I'll wait till I'm in a smoking zone or go home before I light a fag.

Above our heads? Please....I don't think so. You really are strange. And a disgrace whether you are a local or expat. And as for taking children near smokers etc, if they are not meant to be smoking and your children are there, who is in the wrong? The parent or the smoker?

Muppet.

Obviously my comment when above the heads of many but thank you for your vitriol it really made my day. I do like it when people point out I am a weasel and sick individual as it allows me to see another side of myself.

As for the children breathing in the smoke why are you taking them so near to the smokers? And why come on here and complain go and complain to the people who are smoking.

only in a civilized world do laws set by man, apply, equally...

Moza, is a practicing "Westerner", regardless how distasteful the comment..Moza is expressing freedom of speech..

i am one who goes around putting up the "No Smoking" signs..As well as speed limit and many other road safety signs..I routine paint lines on the roads, just to see if I can get the masses to stay in a lane..

This is an anecdote, I discussed the dangers not a point of view, also I did not mention locals, you assumed it was a local.

If his ass was near the cigar and the fart is too loud just a roaring lion in the jungle and got huge gas problems in his belly. But nobody lights his cigar next to someone's ass.

They now serve to only locals now and foreigner's are forbidden from consuming it. Just heard the devastating news last month. ;-)

By anonymous• 12 Jun 2012 00:43

Not to neglect the fact that if someone rips a fart while a nearby person is lighting his thick cigar...

people here complaining about smokers in malls while our great fellas in Amsterdam serve you prime rolled goods while you are sipping on your coffee...

There are flammable cosmetics which people use without their knowledge. If someone lights his cigarrete while the other person at the back just sprayed his perfume and the one who lit the cigarrete has applied a flammable product unto his skin. Which then upon contact he becomes a human torch. Then goes into a running and shouting mode going everywhere and asking for help. Goes to the kitchen to get water to cool himself accidentally tripped the LPG goes into ka boom. Everybody in panic because of what happened a few weeks before. But the fire was controlled but he died afterwards because of the severe burn injury. While the fire was contained many people still died why? Because of stampede. With just a lighting of cigarette all hell broke loose. Why can't anyone understand that such simple things will have devastating results? Would you really gamble these simple things because it is your right to do so? And put other lives in danger? Would a smoker still argue if one of those victims belongs to his or her family? I guess some people would like to try things out just to see if it really endangers someone.

how did I change the argument?

How is lighting a cigarette at a coffee shop life threatening? in terms of a fire ripping and not inhaling smoke.

Please tell me..

No, I'm not retarded, but I'm seriously doubting your mental ability since you completely changed the argument!

what rules? Yeah maybe his cosine or brother should arrest him while he is smokin

Freedom of act is both ways. I don't smoke but if others feel like smoking let them smoke! life is short.. who cares if your kid should not smell smoke.. His daddy is driving a new BMW, that he can't afford back home.. be thankful and take junior to an ice cream shop instead of starbucks!

oh please..... people have been smoking in closed places for centuries and the only thing that causes fire is negligence on a bigger scale than lighting a freaking cigarette. I have never even heard of any smoke shop or sheesha place go on fire before... correct me if I am wrong please.

A MAN having a cigarette with his stupid coffee... what are the CHANCES his cigarette will make a fire man? Are you retarded?

Peter Griffin: "Their country and they can smoke whenever they want! Who are we to set their rules?"

Exactly WHO put the "NO SMOKING" signs on the tables and on the walls?? The EXPATS?? I don't think so!! We have never set the rules in this country and never will.

But if the rules are THERE, they should be enforced!! It is for everyone's benefit, not just the expats!

I'm so tired of EVERY post becoming an "US vs THEM" issue! Everyone should just grow up and take responsibility for their actions!!

mozaismyhero ... "Let your children die, who are you to tell the locals what to do, you are a guest worker. If you no like, go home!"

Can you really be that insensitive, to make this comment a few weeks after a number of parents actually lost their children??

What a despicable young "lady" you are.

Mozaismyhero....what is that all about? Let his or her children die???? Really?

He was considering your people's health and your people's safety. How dare you! Is that what you are taught? To insult and wish a person's children dead? You sick little man.

Sorry, had to edit and carry on. You sick little pathetic weasel excuse of a human being. You are not worth the breath that you take. You will get what is owed to you - people who wish things like that often do.

I don't know how to comment on that...

Smoking is banned in public places here in the UK. That includes bus shelters! But not just in the street.

I smoked for a good 17 years. I stopped 74 days ago (I have an app that counts for me!) I am still struggling and still crave but when I do smell smoke or inhale second hand smoke now, I feel ill!

But all the risk of a fire for the sake of waiting to smoke in an appropriate place? Selfish.
