Versi n Gypsy - I wont comment on the mass killing.. as do not know much about it..

But many good things happening......

Charity...

Help the poor n the needy... etc etc Also happen in the name of God...

A small candle or light lit up in the name of religion.... gives hope to a dieing man to survive,,,

Gives a defeated strength to try harder and win next time.....

Religion is power.... emotional power of a man...

The power is not bad.. it is the people...

Versi - lol.... smart......

True.. its all about finding the light (as you say)... I say feeling connected to the supreme....

Conversion is not the solution for....

If I was never a religious person... where is the conversion when I choose to adopt another set of religious rituals and rules...

And if I am truly spiritual... i.e, feel connected with the supreme... tht is the very purpose of all religions.... appreciating the power and beauty of the supreme... why would somebody convert and where is the question of conversion as the purpose is already solved......

Every true or fake believer said that he received the revelation from God/Alah/Buda/Yahve.. because God/Alah/etc want him to believe. That mean that, because I have not received the revelation of the true God, God/Alah/etc. does not want me to believe. So where is my mistake if He decided this. Do I have the power to work against His will and to start to believe??????

P.S. I consider one of the biggest dogmatic lie the story of Juda - he is still hated by every Christian because he was following the will of God.... Please believe in who or what you want but don't tell me I am stupid for not following the same path.

Once upon a time there was a Muslim girl and she went to school and she met an athiest and she ask him "What does athiest mean" and he said "It means I don't believe in God." She was shocked but as she spent more time with him and watched all the death and violence in the world caused by religion and realized that good people suffer and so do bad people and God never throws lightening bolts at anyone despite what her Imam says she realized he was right and declared herself and athiest to. Then her family killed her because Shariah law says you have to kill any Muslims that convert to another religion.

I agree with most of what you said...

its a dialect of German... fine agreed

It has its own grammar

It has words that are unique to it

So there can be a book written in Swiss German

that's all I am saying...

By Withnail• 1 Jun 2009 17:19
Withnail

i would guess that yes, books can be written using this dialect, which according to dictionary.com is "a variety of a language that is distinguished from other varieties of the same language by features of phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, and by its use by a group of speakers who are set off from others geographically or socially."

i'm not here to argue this with you. you can believe what you want. the general consensus i have found online would suggest that swiss german is part of the german family, which is what the swiss people i know seem to believe as well. out of curiosity have you ever been to switzerland?

also, as a fluent french speaker i have never had a hard time understanding swiss french - in fact it's easier to understand than certain accents from france because the swiss don't speak as fast.

this is supposed to be a forum for people to exchange ideas. why don't you take a minute to breath and absorb what people are telling you. this isn't about winning or being stubborn, it's about sharing ideas.

have a good night.

my mother is swiss german. she would consider swiss german a dialect but i checked some sources online before making my previous post just to be sure.

from most of what i have seen, it's a dialect, which means it's german.

since you're asking about swiss german and no longer mentioning swiss french, should i assume you realize that it is part of the same language as french?

you are on the internet yourself and advising people to read books... isn't that a bit contradictory?

your stubbornness to not comprehend the information that has been provided to you just shows you are biased... heavily biased

By Withnail• 1 Jun 2009 16:50

the french & italian spoken in switzerland are very similar to those spoken in france and italy. the accent is different but that's pretty much it. i am from quebec and worked in germany speaking french with people from france and switzerland, and aside from accents and some words/expressions, it was quite similar.

swiss german is a different story but it is still considered an alemannic variety of German, which means it is a dialect of german.

see here for more detail:

the fact that germans might not understand swiss german is irrelevant. a lot of people in the US won't understand a person from glawgow - it doesn't mean that he isn't speaking english.

definition of dialect from dictionary.com: "a variety of a language that is distinguished from other varieties of the same language by features of phonology, grammar, and vocabulary, and by its use by a group of speakers who are set off from others geographically or socially."

key words in this definition are "varieties of SAME language".

I repeat: just read a book instead of crawling on internet. If you don't have the basic culture you will not be able to discover the white or black on the information posted on web.

I am from the continent and I have lived in the area for couple of years. French is French no matter where is spoken: in Canada, in France, In Switzerland or in Wallis (you should know this if you are not hiding behind a fake nationality because you are ashamed of yours)

The same stays for German or Italian or Arab (is like the Egyptians are speaking Egyptian language and Qataris are speaking Qatari Languages). That's why I am laughing.

Myself I find myself understanding the Qur'an more and more each time I read it. Its not that it is changing, but experiencing life has levels and so does knowledge and education. I appreciate you have understand the meaning of "making a big fuss" for this story of the language. I am sure about your best intent for telling us that story, but I would be happy to hear about something real. I bet there are many extraordinary stories that we, non-Arabic people, will be delighted to hear. Even if there is nothing spectacular like a European girl falling in love with Islam because of her boyfriend.

As per verisim comments, please refer to offical languages of the country. In any place of the world there are differences between nearby cities, not to talk about regions of the same country. In Italy you will find out that the Sicilians does not understand the Napolitans and vice versa (this is called dialect not language), and we are talking about the same country. But they are speaking the same language i.e. Italian.

Tired of discussing on this subject,

Best regards

Obviously you know not what you talk about...

This link is a story and that's all it is... why it bothers you... you should ask that to yourself...

http://www.eldrid.ch/swgerman.htm

"Did you learn that they speak German in Switzerland? That's a common misconception! In Switzerland they speak Swiss German, and that's something completely different. Swiss German has its own pronunciation, many different words, its own grammar, and most Germans have difficulty understanding this funny language. The German-speaking Swiss write standard German, that's true - there is no Swiss German official language (but still some literature, e-mails etc. using the dialect). The Swiss can also speak standard German very well, but to them it's a foreign language that they have to learn how to use when they start school."

You try to invent or to sustain a nice religious story based on a totally inadequate premises. I have nothing against any religion but I really don't like anyone that pretend is the one who know the true and in fact he is just a half-scholar.

And no, there is no basic difference between Swiss German, Swiss French or Swiss Italian. Are the same languages with some regional modifications. There are languages, dialects and regionalisms. Swiss spoken languages are not even dialects.....

I agree it is OK to present anything as a nice story, even if it is a fiction, but why to accept a stupid fiction, when there are a lot of others at a better quality, that are not promoted because the world is filled with such low quality.

By verisimilitude• 1 Jun 2009 15:28
verisimilitude

I can see how you've been making a big fuss about this Swiss language thing thereby indirectly questioning the authenticity of this story... all you've been doing is showing your ignorance...

Its true that there is no Swiss language per se but the French and German spoken in Switzerland is different from the one's spoken for instance in France or Germany...

Hence Swiss translation in this context refers to a translation which is either in Swiss German or Swiss French...

The authenticity of the story may still be in question given the lack of references but atleast not for the reason stated by you
