the alternative is not letting people starve. the alternative is sending food aid from the US when there are emergencies and nothing is available locally, and buying locally when it is available.
i know many people who work in NGOs, and have heard many stories of harm being done. special interests run deep.

Obama had the biggest grass roots movement in history, he got people to once again participate in their country and its direction. If people continue to work with him things will change but given how messed up Bush got it, nothing will happen overnight. At least now people have HOPE and a willingness to change for the better, things will look up but only with support of the public and a good group of people around him. Thats why I like Obama he never promises he will do things, he says WE will make change, no one man can change the world only help to make it better. The fact he is mixed racially meant he had more challenges than most so hopefully that prepared him for whats to come. God bless him and keep him safe.
but, Obama is not a magician nor a superhero,haha... you must be kidding..u of course he can not transform the world into a greener world, alleviate hunger or make all the people prosper by him alone, haha...u he needs cooperation from all, its not only about obama, its a question to everybody that needs a solution from everybody.
we can also ask the leaders of this countries at war what are thier views,
Obama could not answer the actions of these warfreak n corrupt leaders...u
Thank you, your point is clear I just do not agree. I hope the US will continue it's aid efforts regardless of "corporate interests" given the alternative of people starving. You are correct, special interest groups have an impact on the way things get done in DC. and will continue to, even with Obama as pres.
i was not suggesting that emergency food aid is never needed, i was pointing out that the US has one policy for all food aid, and that policy in some circumstances does more harm than good, and that policy is maintained because of corporate interests and lobbying. i was pointing this out to show that there are many many behind the scene interests and deals that most of us know nothing about, and that obama alone would not be able to combat all of these interests.
i thought my point was obvious, but i guess not.

It's just shameful how most people give their utmost expectations when it comes to change and yet they themselves couldn't even try changing for the better.
It has to work both ways.
Expect change when you know that you are capable of change.
have you noticed that in the area of food aid, the US always sends food stuffs from the US to recipient countries? development experts argue that it would be better to buy locally as that not only feeds people but also helps local economies. the US policy can have a detrimental effect in the long term because it can destroy local markets for those who make a living in agriculture.
do you know why the US follows this policy? because shipping companies make huge profits shipping USAID around the world and so they lobby to ensure that the status quo is maintained.
there is only so much one person can do.

"Greener earth...that would take the entire world's help..I don't think Obama can do that all by himself.">>>The US must first sign Kyoto Protocol. Yeah tallg, it would take years to untangle what Obama's predecessor did. Ol' George did pretty good in screwing things up. But at least we can hope war drums to be quiet in the near future.
As Obama said in his acceptance speech, whatever change comes will not happen overnight. It will take several years or even presidential terms. I think some people are expecting a bit too much too soon.
we will see a change, even a small one will help!!
as far as hunger elimination...we've tried that over and over again and it seems that the people whom we try and help, just reach up and bite our hands...
Poverty...well we have to get our own country out of this recession we are sinking into first, then perhaps things will be a bit better everywhere else.
Greener earth...that would take the entire world's help..I don't think Obama can do that all by himself.

Better to let people starve until "local economies" can provide what is needed? Hope that wont be one of Obamas new policies

hunger and food donations for example.
