advice re teacher's salary

I am in the process of negotiating a salary for a head of English. I have 15 years experience in the UK and Australia. I would be eligible for free (shared) housing and medical care. I need to pay for housing costs in the UK and UK debts and my daughter's schooling. Is it possible to get a salary in Qatari school (I need to earn £2400 per month minimum) to meet my expenses.

I can live very frugally in Qatar if necessary. I would like some honest feedback - I will not be offended if someone thinks I am crazy or it is not doable!!!!

Thanks for your help.

PM with the name of the school if you want and i may be able to give you more information.

I am unsure if £2400 per month is needed in total or just to pay your bills back home. If its the latter then you could struggle.

Schools in Qatar range considerably in terms of pay. The average salary seems to be somewhere in the region of 10-12,000QR. To meet your expenses (£2400) you would need just over 13,000QR at the current exchange rate which is close to 5.6QR to the £. (Though take into consideration this can fluctuate).

Some schools pay according to experience, others dont. I am aware of some schools paying only 7500QR to teachers with less than 5 years experience, and only 11,700 to those with over 5 years.

Monthly budgets in Qatar range considerably also. I usually spend on average 4000QR per month. I dont own a car (this will cost you around 1500-2000per month). My only expenses are food, drink, taxi's and the internet. Taxi's are cheap and food prices are lower than the UK. But i shop at Megamart (which is more expensive(it has english food!). Drink is expensive, but if you get a booze license, its roughly the same price as in the UK i think?. Price of a pint in a bar here will set you back about 25-45QR.

You could spend less than 4000QR per month, but i know people who seem to spend far more and they never seem to get up to much.

So if you need £2400 to meet your expenses in the UK + living expenses (4000QR) you will need to aim for 17,000QR. Thats quite a lot of money.

As i said, feel free to PM me. Hope this helps.
