Canadians please respond...
I have 12 years GCC experience and working in Qatar as Project Controls Manager in Construction Industry. My current monthly package is 50K QAR plus annual family tickets and job is long term.
I have offer from Alberta 85k CAD (around 30 % taxes will be deducted). My entire family and my self have Canadian PR also. If i accept this offer, i could get Canadian passport after almost 4.5 years. i do not know if that can help me getting better package internationally than i have now.
Do you think it is worth to leave Qatar and join there.
well,, you having good package in Qatar so doesn't make any sense to go back in canada just 85k..
I would rather not to go calgary which is very expensive.
85k dollars a month.... even bill gates would die for it...
on the other hand if it is 85k dollars a year.. even i wouldnt kill myself for it.,..
I currently live in Calgary, and thinking about moving to Doha. Please see my latest post in the "Cost of Living" section. I have attached a spreadsheet that compares budgets in Calgary vs Doha.
Some points to consider:
1. Calgary is more expensive than Edmonton, so the 85K will get u much further in Edmonton than in Calgary (or in Fort Mac) - main reason is housing is slightly cheaper in Edm than in CGY or Fort Mac.
2. If its just you + wife, 85K may be OK (in a small town like Lethbridge but not in the big city). But if you have any kids, well, tougher.
3. Overall, I agree with the above posts - for someone with your experience, getting into the 90's or low 100's should not be a stretch.
4. The job market here in oil and gas is heating up. Lots of companies are starting to hire again. Meaning you could pass up on this offer and try to find something better..
Thanks to all who shared their views. and very special thanks to user "qatarisun"...
well, that was not very logical lol
everyone should do wtv it takes in life to improve their image and $ making potential...
Plus, it is not like he is doing it for free or against the law.. it is costing him about (164,383 - 55.xx) = about 109,000 USD every year, more if you add tickets and all other privileges he has now..It is an investment.
I don't think it is worth it though.
Thats not what he is asking about. He asked if it is worth to "sacrifice" in Canada for few years for sake of getting Canadian passport so that he could come back to GCC as a Canadian on better package than he has now.
And let me answer him.
Stay where you are. And not because "salary is better" or "lifestyle is higher" or whatever crap it is... But just because STOP F*** USING CANADIAN SYSTEM!! Listen, you, Canadian passports is not supposed to be USED for "improving your imidge" or for any other your own benefits! this is so jerky to PLAN USING anything or anybody. If you intend to live in Canada and raise your kids there and to be Canadian, this is one thing. If you intend to use Canada for any of your own dirty purposes, you better don't even come close there! clear?
DP
move to Australia !!!
Not a good idea. My parents moved to Canada when I was little for a "better life" but in the end they just kept on reminiscing about what they USED to have. I raised and educated their and had all the benefits of being brought up Canadian, but in the end I'm here because I have a much better quality of life. Money is one thing, but you won't have TIME to spend with your kids. I worked in Toronto for 6 years and after promotions I had only 3 weeks vacation! You can't do anything with that!
can't agree more
I know a few expats who have emigrated to Canada.
The biggest mistake they make is to get caught up in the money saving issue. They are used to having the ability to save fair amounts in the Gulf.
They asume that it "should" be the same in Canada. This is not the case. What then happens is that they leave their family in Canada and come back to the Gulf alone.
So, think hard before deciding...
contentment. Only very few people who have everything, Most of us, have to sacrifice something in exchange for something! It's your call, not only for yourself but for your whole family! Make a checklist of your priorities and from there, you decide. Money is not everything!
dude, you making that much money and you want a Canadian passport? I got that stinky passport and look at me here!
OK, your kids will have free school..big deal.. u'll have pension plan at 65 and get 1000 usd.. but do you really need it? unless if you enjoy living in an ice cube for 9 months every year, i would say, stick here cause you are doing great.
85 K/year is NOTHING believe me. after taxes good luck affording to buy your groceries. I was single making about 80K and I lived by the check, but to each of us their lifestyle and objectives..
Chevydjak that's per year. It's half of what he's making now and that's before taxes.
85k CAD per month? I will goooooo for it!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats an annual salary and you have yet to deduct property tax if you buy a home and social insurance and maybe several months private healthcare( rules may have changed, but im not sure you can use local free healthcare at first ).
i used to earn your monthly salary in a week in the late 90s.I had pay 53% tax !!, then the brits screwed up and wanted 40% on top ! nearly quit till the company agreed to pay my british deduction until the double tax treaty kicked in
Generally when jobs are opened to non canadians outside the country they have to go through a process(statewide, then federalwide) to show that canadians wont take the job( usually because the pay package is poor )
citizenship of canada is a plus if you can get it( rules may change ), but be careful because there is a bit of a backlash against people who use it just to get better things in life and dont pay canadian tax..
Also you better check the tax situation because canadians are subject to tax on your worldwide income wherever you work( things may have changed a little though, so perhaps someone can comment ).
also can you and family cope with canadian winters?
i only experienced ottawa winters and suprisingly i was fine about it but i believe albertas are worse.
so think very carefully for this.
Many thanks and comments noted
What was your objective for getting a Canadian RP ?
For most of the expats I have met, it was to have a better education / life for their children.
From what you have said, you are looking to go to Canada, get the passport and come back.
So, what you have to work out is that would it be better to just stay here, generate cash, save the money and move somewhere once your kids are old enough or you leave your job.
Strong advice not to move to Canada.
85K in Canada is not enough (especially for Alberta). After paying all taxes you will end up with app.$ 4K.
50-70% of your monthly expenses will go to pay mortgage, utilities, insurance(s). Weekly groceries are about $200+.
If you pay for furniture, car and other things on monthly basis then you'll end up with nothing to save.
I'm from Alberta and that salary is not enough that's why I'm in Qatar now enjoying no TAX
iam not canadian...iam an INDIAN...50k is an excellent package... go for it....
- YEAH RIGHT! hahaha
I wouldn't take it either, it is too low.
I wouldn't take it and I am Canadian. The cost of living in Alberta is high and while the schools might be better you'll never be able to afford University education for your kids.
from 50000QR/month to $85 000, there's a very good chance you may not be able to save anything at all. Canada is expensive and very heavily taxed. Many people send their wife and children for the few years to get the passport and then husband gets sponsored. Otherwise you may be losing a job most North American professionals just dream about.
I strongly encourage you to take the offer in Canada. Apart from the good pay, you will have a very good life, and yes, it is a major plus to have a Canadian citizenship in the middle east, but watch out for the cold weather.
YES! Think long term. Think about your kids' future.
Education in Canada is hell a lot better than in here, which your kids will greatly benefit!
CAD 85K in Canada will earn you a decent lifestyle.
