I got an offer...Should I take it?

Alright, I've been made an offer for a 3 year contract in Doha, I'm curious what you think of it I'll be living there with my new wife.

-Salary is 17,500 QR per Month
-Housing is provided, fully furnished (1300-1500 square feet private apartment building or villa - employees only) at no cost to me.
-Car allowance of 600QR per month
-1 round trip flight home per year for family
-8000QR moving expenses (shipping things from home, etc.)
-Full medical and dental coverage for family

Just curious what expenses you think I'll run into per month (Television from Showtime Arabia, Internet from Q-tel, Telephone from Q-tel and groceries)?

I'm also curious if my wife will be able to work. She has a degree in biology. At the moment, I'm told the school sponsors me for my visa, and I sponsor her as spouse.

Thanks for any help!

INDIAN

Hello,

Is there any special needs school where Indians work?

My wife would like to look for an opportunity as she has lot of experience in that field.

Thanks

Sounds reasonable to me. If you don't have children and are planning to have any just check into the provison for schooling.

Also wives genarally stay under thier husbands sponsorship. So if she gets a job she will get a flat salary with none of the extra benifits....I say this is generally the case. It may depend on her quals and where she finds work. Packages vary greatly and it can depend on your negotiating skills.

Women generally get less which does p*ss us off at times....but I suppose the country is moving forward....slowly

Yes, I felt very grateful to get such an offer. Here it would be considered excellent, so I was just checking to see what others from Qatar would think of it. Sometimes you don't know what to expect with costs other than housing

dude you are lucky that straight out of the university and you are getting that much. I know people who has centuries of experience and still they are making way less than you

That's a great salary for someone walking out of university!

Plus, if you wife works and earns even half of that...well, you can save a lot!

Good luck :)

I think the car allowance looks low but the salary should make up for it. Medical and dental probably means government and that's OK but not always the smoothest experience. If you plan to have a baby while you are over here then your wife will probably want to use a private hospital and that will cost. Don't know if this is your plan, just thinking. I have a friend who's husband got a job here first and now she has just gotten a job at the special-needs school. Her husband was her sponsor. I'll have to ask her if her sponsor changed to her employer. It seems like schools are always hiring so I don't see it being too difficult for your wife.

Well, Going to Dubai isn't an option. Besides, I'm looking forward to my time in Qatar. I'm not really interested in looking for a new job, I'm just wondering if the one that I have is worth-while monetarily.

save nothing if you go to Dubai.

Qatar isn't a bad place and is improving in terms of what's available to expatriates.

You wife should be able to get a job but maybe not in biology, who knows.

Well, my wife and I don't have an extravagant lifestyle. We both just graduated from university in May. We're just excited about not having to debate the economics of a cheeseburger at McDonalds :P

Craiger, you should be able to save quite a bit provided you don't have an extravagant lifestyle and enjoy your homelife rather than partying or extravagat restaurant meals etc.....Greg
