Offer from RGas - Ok - Good - No Good?

I'm from US with 10+ years of experience. I got an offer from RGas as well as PDO (Oman), I'm more inclined towards PDO offer but the offer at RGas is little more than PDO, and RG is saying there are good chances of increase as well (which I don't buy though)

Basic Salary: QR.22,000 (per month)
Skills Allowance (30%) QR 6600 (per month)
Transport Allowance QR 1,500 (per month)

Total amount per month QR 30,400 (US$8,328)

Plus all the standard benefits which company offers to all employees are included, and they are:

annual leave of 30+ days/year
kids education in American/British School
Bonus
ESB
Housing in Al Khor
Medical, Dental & life insurance
Airfare to US for the family every year

Is this a good offer? is there a room for negotiation? I want to negotiate but reasonably

Any comparison in Oman & Qatar living standards?

Any advise/suggestions/comments would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance folks!

jojo - I don't know that because we discussed the $ only, once we agree on that, then I will get a formal OL, which I think, will have all this info.

Ramki - I'm US national with Indian origin. I have the same feeling after visiting Oman and Qatar. Nothing decided yet, still evaluating and comparing...long way to go

Anil Chitale,

May I know what grade are you being offered in Ras Gas ?

Ramki your review of Oman is similar to what other's have told be that worked there. 3 separate couples loved Oman and all prefer it over Doha but their companies transferred them to Qatar.

You did not tell about your nationality. I am an Indian.

For a decent and excellent life style. Oman can be chosen. I am working as a secondment to PDO.

Here 2 bed room unfurnished apartment starts from minimum 250 Omani riyals(OMR) to 400 OMR. For your lifestyle, I think you can consider 350 OMR per month.

People, life, place, climate, etc,., everything is great. Climate remain the same all over the gulf, but in Oman, Muscat, there is no winter. You can just walk anytime during the winter with a T-shirt. People are very kindly. excellent place to live with family. No Traffic jams, disciplined and organised traffice. Your travel between office to home will be maximum 15 minutes. PDO office is in the city and very good residential areas are within 4-7 miles. You will take not more than 10 -15 minutes drive any time of the day.

Lot of outings,

This Muscat is great!

Some news on my side, when I tried to negotiate with HR I'm told that the package they offered me is already more than what my manager (sorry! I don't want to list his nationality and offend people) is getting and the more difference I create the more problems I'm welcoming.....what does this mean? Am I crossing some cultural lines in negotiating? I didn't respond to them because I want to understand the culture (or read between the lines) before I respond them. (randr88 - I will try not to be greedy)

On a side note, I myself have gone through many cultural shocks/jokes when I moved to US from India about 20 years ago. To cheer up you guys, let me share one: (I have many in stock though)

I came from a very conservative Hindu family from an Indian village (had a countable visits to the city) but almost top in the school, didn't know anything about guy-gal relationship and so on. On my first day of college in US (and 3rd day in US), our lecturer took us all to the cafeteria after the lecture so that we will get to know each other. The protocol was to introduce ourself to the group, not knowing what to say (scared and an accent) I said, I'm Anil Chitale, from India, not married, that's it!!! With this the lecturer started asking questions like where & what did I study? what brought me US? etc, I answered them all and when he asked me how many kids I have? I answered "I'm not married", he asked me again the same question, I answered him again "I'm not married", then he asked me how is "having kids" related to "marriage"? I told him, first marriage takes place and then kids come in......everybody laughed out loud, it meant lot more than SHUT UP to me, and I cried that day while going from school to my dorm.

To me this was the cultural thing and now I know the right answer :)

I agree Anil, I am an American also and you do not want to work anywhere in the Middle East without bill-free housing. It is a budget buster here.

Oman is a real nice place but I have never worked there. Qatar is a good place to work and save money if you can keep yourself away from the trappings and baubles of the "nouveau riche".

Ras Gas is a good stable company and if you give them your best you will be rewarded, but don't get too greedy or compare paychecks, it is the death nell for having a good time in the Gulf.

Good luck!

It's avery god offer, as long as they will provide the accommodation.

Never accept an offer in Qatar without accommodation provided by company.

Thanks lamea:

I agree with your comments but I don't think cost of living will make a big difference (it will make a difference though) given that most of the things are paid by the company like housing, utilities, school, transportation etc. (the main killer expenses), however, there are some expenses which are directly related to cost of living which doesn't account to many $$$. I have visited both the countries for the interview, I found Qatar better than Oman (no particular reason)

Thanks again

the pay is good, but you must consider the cost of living in qatar which is very high compared to Oman. so better evaluate the pay against the cost of living.

Ras Gas is one of the best pay master in Qatar, with free housing and other benefits the pay is good.
