Hi all,

I have an offer from the very big medical center in Doha, which provides me a tech job, with base pay of 13k-18k per month with the following benefits:

  • Free furnished accommodation provided, including maintenance and utilities (apart from mobile and long distance phone calls)
  • Transportation Allowance of QR 1,700 per month
  • 37 work days paid annual leave for each completed year of employment. Plus 7 public holidays and 3 “floating” days.
  • End of Service Gratuity of one month’s basic salary for each completed year of service (based upon final monthly base salary).
  • Relocation/Repatriation: one-way air ticket for you and eligible dependents from your home of record at commencement of the initial contract, and at the end of service back to home of record.
  • A Relocation/Repatriation Allowance of QR 5,475 in lieu of air freight allowance, to cover shipment, storage and/or set up or closing charges related to relocation to Qatar or repatriation to home of record.
  • Annual Air Fare allowance Cash in lieu of economy class annual leave return airfare to home of record for yourself and your eligible onsite dependents.
  • Does the package sound okay? Is it enough to survive in Doha? What about saving money? I am from Australia and basically, I hear a lot of different things about places like Doha, just wanna hear some real advices here.

English is the common language here. Getting to know people from all corners of the globe is the #1 reason to come here. Imagine having friends of different religions, cultures, traditions etc. It is fabulous! You will never regret it--especially for that reason.

The accomodation is actually independent, not sharing. Hm..now i cant decide....

My mum's been trying to hold me back as she said i will regret going into a complete unknown desert with all people speaking foreign language...

I donno, just feel like wanna try things out when i am still young.

3.5k is AUD, not including the living expenses.

I would suggest you to consider it seriously, at your age it seems good to me. Once this global melt down finishes, you can try some other job too, good luck!

Shared vs independant accomodation is something you'll have to speak to your employer about. No one here can answer that for you.

Regarding your current salary, is that in AUD or USD?

And is the 3.5k figure before or after you account for the cost of accomodation and utilities?

Either way you'll have to consider the impact of the USD rising or falling against the AUD so that you can calculate how much money you'll be left with when you return. It's a gamble that you'll have to take.

Expenses are hard to judge. It will depend on your lifestyle how much you save. You could easily be saving 10,000 per month if you tried.

Well, I am currenly 25 year old, single. In Australia, I am getting about 3.5k per month after taxout. I would hope to live with own house/apartment (not sharing). I am not sure if usually the accomodation benefit means that i find my own place or they arrange for me?

I guess the point which attracted me was the no income tax thing? But thinking further about it, if the expenses there is big, then it's not worth to move.

The benefits are standard. Nothing special, nothing omitted.

As for the salary - it's good, or bad. It just depends on what you currently do, what you currently earn, and how you currently live.

I would venture that for someone your age it is a good salary and you will be able to have a good life here at either end of that salary range.

If you get 18K is sure better.

It depends also how much do you get now in your hometown, how old are you and if you have a family.

It is a good salary if you have a bit of seniority but far from director lever...

By the way, if I will find 18-20K I will move.
