PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi all

I'm sorry-i know you must have been asked this a million times but I'm tying to figure things out....I'm from the Uk...I've been offered a job in Doha with a basic salary of 12,471 QR a month, plus 10,000QR housing allowance a month and a furniture allowance of 17,5000R.  I'm single.  they've offered returned flights once a year during my annual leave plus tickets for a husband and kids (which I don't have!)...I have emailed them asking to clarify whether this will be tax free and if my sister/parents etc would qualify for the flight allowance...they've yet to reply but they asked that I sign the contract by today!!!

Am I being foolish if I just sign the thing and fax it over?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

hi newqatarchick,

i think you'll be fine. and in my honest opinion, your offer is great for a single person like yourself. in terms of the culture shock and pressure, you dont have to worry about it. a little more precaution and culture/environment consciousness is the only thing you need.

you can wear whatever you want, just dont show so much flesh even though its 50 degrees celsius. party on the right place and buy/drink alcohol on th e right place.

driving is going to be a heck of an experience im pretty sure.

;)

Hi

thanks...and soryy it's taken me  so long to reply...i hadn't logged in for ages...I did accept the job so now it's a case of waiting for visas etc...Can I ask you something?

are "foreign" i.e. non-Qatari nationals...really full-on? I know that sounds like a strange question but i get the sense that for those coming from abroad the new atmosphere acts like a pressure cooker awth the result that certain processes are "speeded up" in a way they wouldn't be anywhere else...i'm speaking in riddles but I think you know what i'm talking about...i'm conservative and i'd rather be prepared and not be taken  off-guard!

thanks again...

Its very warm here. Like you could really bring all the solar experimental stuff you can get. They'll work magic here.

The offer you got looks great. And in qatar, as far as I know it, job givers consider bro/sis/parents non-family as far as allowances are concerned. So travel, medical, school, or any such allowances wud be only for the husband and children.

People here are really gud at minding there own businesses. If you like your privacy, honor, etc you'll most probably love it here. But there are occasional guys who get horny and drive crazy on the streets (You'll meet atleast one everyday). Qatari (or local) girls are mostly very friendly (unless you are the unlucky sort) and the local guys are weird (they wont hurt you or anything, but they alwez act weird.)

Not much to do or see around here unless you have some friends or family here already. Or you could join one of the membership only clubs. There are many (so i've heard) but I know of only Garveys. And no decent nightlife here either (unless sleeping is part of the nightlife).

Personally I love Qatar. Its boring, yes. But I'm starting to like being independent, selfish, weird, etc without having to offend anybody. Then again its just me. And even I cant understand me at times.

isn't great and I doubt you will be able to use the "family" air ticket for other than husband. If the school do agree then get it in writing.

Health care and some sort of transport allowance need to be catered for.

It would be worth trying to have them increase the basic salary.

Hi There.

1. Your salary will be tax free.

2. The furniture allowance is not amazing but you will be able to find a furnished flat for your allowance and can use the furniture allowance for bits and bobs or electronic goods.

3.You should be getting a cash car allowance. Do ask them for that. It can be anything from Qrs.1,000/- to Qrs.2,000/-. By having an allowance, you could rent a car until you settle and then possibly but one on installments via the bank.

4. As you are single, the salary is fine. In fact, you may find that you do more over here in place of the UK.

If you are looking for a change and experience, I would say go for it. I would not sign the contract until you have all the issues sorted though. Which company is it that are so eager to see you sign today and send via fax???

hi there, i think that is a great offer you getting! really it sounds really good why not give it a go? you will like it here in Qatar. Hope all goes well for you :-)

It's really hard to decide whether to accept or not that offer. If ur getting only a difference of 10-20 % of the salary u have in UK (net the tax), better to ask for more. I know some people like u getting a salary bet. 15-25K QR here depending on the job profession. Besides, considering that small salary difference it's hard to be away from ur love ones. So bargain for more!

well, so in uk u get 14.4 k before tax, how much is tax?, assum 30%, sorry i have no clue about uk tax levels u make around 10 K QAR, here it is 12 K... 20% increase.. not a huge but than 10 K rent per month, will it be paid u by cash or will they directly pay to landloard,

reason coz, if they pay u direct. u can get 1 bed room for say 6 K and get additonal 4 K to ur  bottom line...  this make it around 60% increase..... can be worth it... but ensure they give u medical, transport, etc as well.

any other allowances?? try to negoiate around 20% more to u r basic salary... best of luck and message me if u need any more info.. regards

Lol egyknight1 be civilized please. She's asking for suggestion not ur no.

Hey Qatarchick. I guess u will have to get used to such people in Qatar, but dont worry, its a safe place. I think the job offer you got is amazing. You should take it and congratulations.

It's always the small things that make big differences.

hey

thank you so much for replying...I'm single...no husband and no kids, family all back in he UK so i'll be making the mve all by myself (Ive never lived away from home!)....in the UK i get £24kGBP which works out at 173,000QR a year....obviously I pay tax here....what are your thoughts?

salary will be tax free

10 K per month u can easily etc house 2 bed room furnish apartment

12 K is all that you get in your pocket? It is not bad, considering your allowances and neither get.

main question how much is this going to be a difference vs what you are earning in UK?  I suggust is this si atleast 40% or more than make the move, you can make the move for less if you have other motives e.g. other relatives in here or like the sun sand and beach..... it's a very safe place, not as busy and nice as Dubai but not bad, do not think they will allow u r sis and parents ticket allowance but should to your husband and kids,

if ur  husband is also coming and he has job than it can be easy desicsion for u i.e. go for it with out much thought...

if they pay, housing, transport, school kids, etc, than u r basic expense will be in range of 2.5 to 3 K QAR MAX.....

however since i do not drink i have not kept allowance of alcohal etc.... trust this help cheers,
