My husband has been offered a position within Qatar airways. The position is a level 9. Could anyone tell us what the company accommodation would be like for this level. We need to make a decision quickly so any replys would be great.

Thank you for writing an informative blog on moving and transport. People living in Canada face a lot of such issues and finding a highly professional moving or transportation company is very hard. There are only a few reputed companies in Laval area like http://demenagementlaval.ca/ which offer exceptional services. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge with us.

Good for you felix....I guess this is the only way they might get it in their heads that they wont be able to recruit skilled professionals from the west unless they offer a lucrative and fair renumeration package.

Well Alecia,

You must be lucky. I was offered a Grade 8 job with a base of 11500QAR and the same allowances. I countered for a higher amount, which the kindly replied that the offer stands as is after manager review. So I turned it down.

I want to thank everyone for all their help and comments.

Enjoy life....

Hi,

Oh you surprise me with the news that some grade 7 get 3-br apartments. I don't want to link this to 'that' familiar issue again but I would guess some people in the facility dept see people in that way.

For housing allowances, they have removed part of it for new employees, so don't compare their current allowance level with what you received before.

grade 8 is usually a managerial designation.

which should make you eligible for a 3 bedroom accomodation or an allowance which should be equivalent to that....if you browse thru QL u'll see that there's not much available in 5000QR...

The salary is really a joke....u'd feel really bad if you heard that others in the same grade are making a whole lot...but then people say that you really shouldnt question anything nor compare??? I really dont agree with this one, but then it really boils down what your options are, and how the offer compares to your present earnings/priorities.

I think there is a lot you can negotiate for....and

if they need you they'll pay you.

Think-Twice....we knew a couple of grade 7 employees who were offered 3 bedroom accomodations!! However, what was more funny was that we also knew some grade 8 managers who were living in 2 bedroom apartments. It was awful cuz it created an unhealthy atmosphere where the manager was enjoying fewer benefits and people under him more????

I'm sorry if you are from the US you will not get far on that package. (Whether you are white or not is irrelevant, if that's important for you probably best to stay where you are)

Hey ash_w, so here is the offer. personally I was expecting a bit more but how fair do you believe this is:

Grade 8 Title

Basic salary 11,500

Housing 5,000

Transport 1,250

Utilities 300

Laundry 70

Plus school up to 35,000 (except that I have no children)

I have 18 years total airline experience which include 8 years of control centre operations (which is what I am being offered)

I am concerned that the mecdical insurance does not include dental and from looking at the housuing market in Doha 5,000 doesn't get a lot.

PS (US citizen white)

Hi,

QR25000-30000? I think it's for manager, i.e. grade 8. For grade 7, I would guess less than QR20000.

But for housing, my understanding is same as you. I am not sure if any grade 7 ever has the luck of being allocated a 3br apartment ...

Think2

its kinda difficult to say what the salary range is for each of these grades, because what they'll pay you will depend on several factors such as your (in the order of importance :-)...your skin colour, your passport, how you present yourself, your experience, and finally your skills and qualifications!!!!

wouldnt want to generalize to all grades but do know for sure that for grades 7 & 8 if:

1) you're a US citizen, being hired from the US, have non relevant experience of 5-10 years of work in the US, and a non-white you might end up with QR 10,000 + accomodation (i.e 2 bedroom apartment).

2) you're a US citizen, being hired from the US, have relevant experience of 5-10 years in the US, non-white you might end up with QR 18,000 + accomodation (i.e 2 bedrooms apt)

3) you're a US citizen, being hired from the US, have non-relevant experience of however many/or less years, but you're white (caucasian) you might end up with QR 25,000-QR30,000 + accomodation (i.e 3 bedrooms apt)

4) citizens of the indian subcontinent and other middle eastern countries having similar skills have a lower pay bracket.

just a side note: the above is what I know from my experience as a former QR employee...policies keep changing!!! Also I dont intend to offend the citizens of any country the above is truly how QR and other middle eastern employers discriminate among the pay scales of their employees.

Internet connection is available through company (service provided by QTEL) Your monthly subscription will be duduct from your salary. QR does not provide free internet to its'employees

Usually take a week to get connected. That if the office is not too busy.

Hi tiger9p, I guess you belong to flight deck crew, so you enjoy an extra 50kg of unaccompanied baggages. I belong to an office grade, so I am entitled to 100 kg only. You will know the details when they send you joining formalities.

However, I didn't use it at all, as most of my stuffs are books. I used my friend's company to move them ex-HK to Doha (by ship). They told me my books weight 530kg! I would be broke if I shipped them by air ...

Thanks again "Think-Twice" I have been to the Ramada before. I spend 3 nights there for my interview. I love the walkway to the gym and swimming pool. It's nice and relaxing. My joining date will be on October 20th. I would actually prefer a company apartment rather than finding my own cuz the rent there are so high and unpredictable. I just hate the way some landlord there hike up the price for no reason.

The hotel is nice, but where will you put all of your stuff? QR entitle you to bring 150 kgs of baggages, and I think that it will occupy most space inside the room.

Another good thing about Ramada is free high speed internet inside every room.

Hello,

If you are joining QR from another country, you will be put in a hotel (guess they always book Ramada Hotel) for 1st 21 days. The hotel is good, with swimming pool, gym, tennis courts & other facilities. Many restaurants & shops are nearby, so no worries.

During this period either they would search for an apartment (upon your chasing) or you would look for your own accomodation. I haven't got a chance to see the company apartment, so I can't tell how it's like.

"Think-Twice" Thanks so much for your information! I will try to contact them like 2 weeks before my joining date, that way thing can be correct if needed.

One other question. Does QR put you in a hotel or their apartmnet right after you have arrived in Doha?

Thanks so much!

Do QR provide you with immediate housing upon ur arrival in Doha? What kinda accomodation do they put you in while Housing dept sort out ur new place? Any idea how long the interim period has been ? Also, do the housing provide by QR are in compounds wif facilities like pool & gym or merely just an apartment and parking ?

Toger9p, short notice in my case. I left my hometown on 17-Sep but I receive my visa, air ticket and joining pack only one week before.

You must keep chasing, because you won't have enough time for correction in case any discrepency occurs on your joining formalities. In my case, they put my name wrongly on the air ticket.

Yes AZ, they will start searching for an apartment for you after you have reported duty here. I came here this Monday and they only told the people to look for apartment for me.

I am told that apartments are generally decent (some are older though). But you may need to think about the locations ...

Thanx.

Hi friends,

I just started a forum topic as below. When I read your posts as above, I felt I should write in here.

I am an Indian, moving into Doha, Qatar by mid October. Can somebody please advice me on where to take good family accomodation ? Some of my friends advised me to take accomodation in a place called Old Airport Area. Are 2 or 3 BHK apartments available here ? Or small Villas ? What kind of rents should I expect ?

Also, what car should I be looking at (new) for a price of approximately QR 75000 to 85000 ?

I am looking for a peaceful and good life in Doha. Hope, this is a first step towards that.

Many thanks in advance,

QatarIndian.

3 bedroom apartments range between 9000-12000 QAR

I dont think there are 4 bedroom apartments here...u'll have to go for a villa which will probably cost over 12,000 QAR (dont be mislead by some of the prices that seem to be on the lower side, because those properties must have some flaw...)

For a better feel of the market you should check out the classified section @ www.gulf-times.com

I really cant say at what rate the rents are appreciating...its basically upto the good ol' landlord.

You'd probably get more replies if you post this question as a separate thread!

I am being offered a job in a private sector. I am wondering what is the rental housing cost per month for a 3-4 bedroom appartment (unfurnished to fully furnished) some 30 to 45 minutes drive from the Airport. I heard different figures ranging from QAR7000/month to QAR20,000/month. I need to make a decision on the offer and would appreciate if someone can respond with the latest rental figures of 2007. Additionally, how much should I expect the rent to go up every year?

Oh ash_w,

They explained me the accomodation during open day, during which my position and grade were undecided. I suppose what they said was a min arrangement available. I only knew my grade (7) after receiving their offer, so I will take your experience and see what happens.

It'll be a real surprise if I could live in a 2-bedroom apartment. I have never lived in such an apartment in HK in my entire life!

There you go....i dont understand why u'll be sharing your apartment if u're in grade 7?

As far as I know its quite clear that grade 7 employees are eligible for a 2 bedroom ff apartment (independent).

Either u're not in grade 7, and they'll surprise you by saying that when you get here. Or, you may be in grade 7 but they're just trying to play around with you...so u'll just settle for what they give you.....its just beyond me!

BTW, you will be on family status, eh?

By Think-Twice• 3 Sep 2007 15:42

Hi ash_w,

It's valuable info. I will move to Doha for QR soon. What approach do you recommend for dealing with their housing dept? Will they show you several apartments for choice (I am in grade 7), or do they just assign one? They told me the apartment is shared (for common areas, e.g. kitchen, sitting room), so what do you recommend us to do to get the right 'mix'?

Thanks.

I'm not sure what dept. u all will be joining, as the levels may vary across departments. For the commercial dept. its something like this:

grade 7 gets 2 bedroom ff apartment

grade 8 gets 3 bedroom ff apartment

grade 9 also gets 3 bedroom ff apartment

grade 10 or more gets a villa

The apartment buildings owned by QR are scattered all over the town, all vary in sizes and quality. There housing dept. is extremely disorganized and to a certain extent deceitful, because they'll try to get away by showing you the worst place even if better ones are available.

If we could do it over, we'd probably ask for photos or better yet come down here and see the place....it'll be worth the trouble!

well....if they are providing accomodation then i think it will be a flat ...
