Dear Friends,

Kindly share your advice / suggestions that what is the appropriate acceptable salary package in Qatar Government Sector (Ashghal) for a PhD qualified person with 15 plus years of experience. Currently I am working with UNDP Kuwait. Should I negotiate with the HR or they will follow their standard salary package system. Thank you in advance.

Dear Britexpat, Yacine and Friends,

Agree with all of your comments and suggestions & Thank you very much. I am just waiting to hear from the HR and he has indicated that they Government has some standard package & benefit slabs based on qualifications & experience and they will follow their norms even if I negotiate more or less as indicated by Yacine. But my only worry is that they shouldn't play with the nationality and discriminations etc. Anyhow, let me wait and update you all as soon as get some reply.

I agree with Darkt. Lost of people will give you here some stupid suggestions that are not based on facts but on rumours they hear here and there. If you are on 10k USD then I assume you would move to a new job if you get 14k or 15k, as this is a substantial 40/50 per cent pay rise. In Qatari Riyals, this means any offer starting from 50k should be a good one for you.

Also, negotiation does not work with the government sector. They have salaries established by law and by the government. There is always a margin of negotiation but it is very tiny (for example, they can increase their offer from 15k QAR to 17k QAR, but that's it). So eventually, go for whatever you like and think is reasonable, not for what others are paid. You will probably hear stories of people with lower qualifications and experience earning more than you. Well, ignore them. Other people's salaries is none of your business I am afraid and you shouldn't fall into the game of comparing, otherwise you might end up like Darkt.

The simple fact is that you should go with what you feel us right - not what others tell you .

In my opinion , people who are comfortable here on 20k a month will tell you that 30k is not enough and you should ask for more.

Be true to yourself and decide given your own criteria. What are you earning now ? Would you move only for a 15% increase or 30% percent increase ?

Do you want yo move to a better company .. Etc etc

Dear Darkt, I am not in hurry to switchover from my current position in Kuwait & working with a global organization with good reputation. Due to professional career move, I am looking for a change and in fact Ashghal approached me to proceed. Let me wait for 2-3 days and come back to you with the update. Thank you

Many thanks my dear friends for giving me an overview and range of the packages. Let me negotiate (if possible) or let them send their draft proposal for negotiation and will update you before this weekend.

Let me share my experience :). 2+ years ago, I received an offer from a governmental organisation in Qatar consisting of the following package:

- 32 000 QAR Salary

- 10000 QAR Housing Allowance

- Education for my kid (KG0 then)

- Medical insurance for all my family

- Airfare costs covered for all my family twice per year (Economy)

When I discussed on forums -including here in QL- how much should I receive according to my profile Many suggested that I should not settle less than 50K salary + Housing + the rest of the allowances. I was convinced and tried to negotiate and asked for higher salary and higher housing allowance. They refused and they moved forward to another candidate as I was informed later.

I ended up moving to KSA few months later of course with a package that is actually less interesting than the Qatari one. I accepted because I had to move out from where I was! It was quite urgent!

Now I am again trying to move to Qatar.

So what I say is consider how urgent is it for you to move out of Kuwait. If it is urgent be more lenient and flexible in considering the offers you will receive even if they are a bit lower than what you deserve (Reasonably lower of course). If you are comfortable in Kuwait you can negotiate serenely your package... :)

Good luck!

Don't settle for anything less than 75,000 per month, plus housing, education, business class flights and full medical with maid allowance
