Salary Deduction, normal?.

Hi Everyone I want to ask if its normal to deduct our salary if we do something bad or a very very simple mistake in your work?. This is my First time working and what happen to me is the office told me to guard the gate everytime, everyday when I'm done with my task ,So I do their command,I have my own chair in that place but not all the time. So that time there's no chair, So I just stand for almost 2 hours outside with all the heat. So I decided to sit for awhile because there's no people going in. So I sited on the stairs near the gate but I can't see the gate from where I sited but I can see who's the people going in and out. Then my boss saw me sited there and he told me why I'm staying there and blablabla. So I explain everything but I know he is not listening to me. Then he told me you have 1 day salary deduction and if I do it again he will fire me from my work. It's not even in our contract that we will be in charge of the gate. So I'm asking everybody if its normal to deduct your hard owned salary if you've done any mistakes. Thanks. Just a newbie..

Sometimes, i told the labours that if they do not make their duties well, i will deduct or cut their salaries BUT i NEVER did that in their actual salaries...

According to ISO 9001:2008, clause 6.3

The organization shall determine, provide and maintain the infastructure needed to achieve conformity to product requirements. Infastructures includes, as applicable: buildings, workspace and associated facilities, equipments (both hardware and software) and supporting services ( transport, communication or information systems).

If your job really needs a seat, then you have to inform them to provide you. But if its not, then you have to realize that sitting while on duty is something that needs punishment (maybe oral reprimand, written, suspension, salary deduction, etc.).

By the way, i'm an ISO auditor.. i just based my answer accordingly.

If your job post is a watchman or security guard then your boss is right. You should be at least near the gate to perform your job. In your sad situation, you can ask your administration officer ( in a nice way) to provide you a shelter ( porta cabin with AC etc)with chair of course. Surely they will understand you.

yes it does happen mostly to low paid workers and labour. Normally it is a way of saying that you did something wrong. For example on site if a labour disobeys any safety rules which may put him or his co workers in danger then some Contractors may deduct some salary to as a penalty and hope he will not do it again.

So after this incident I am sure you will not sit on the stairs. Just ask your company to provide you a seat.
