Salary package at CMU qatar campus
Hi,
I hold a master degree in computer science and 10 years of experience in the US.
I will move to qatar with my wife and 2 kids (they need day care).
I just got this offer letter from Qatar CMU campus to work as a research assitant. I think the offer is low. Can you help me decide or should I negociate more and how much should I ask for ?
-Basic Salary: 10000 rials per month
-Home Country House Maintenance: 912 rial per month
-Foreign service allowance: 25% of basic salry (2500 rials per month)
-University sponsored housing includes utilities
-Transportation to rent a car: 2100 per month
also they will pay for my installation fees, shipping babages and the flight of course and there is an end of service benefit. I am also eligible to subscribe for the university health benefit, but I need to pay I think for that.
Do you think that i will be able to save some good money with this packge ? Especially that I have to pay myself for my flight ticket when I go back home for the yearly vacation.
Updates:
I just asked the HR people and they said that private health care is provided free of charge but I have to pay som co-pay for office visits.
Also they said the kids tuition are covered from KinderGarten to grade12.
But still I have no annual air line tickets for free !
Also they said I can buy a car and still get the 2190 rials per month transport allowance.
But I will try to negociate a basic salary increase maybe 12k or so.
Hi,

With a family of 4 and with 10 years US experience, I would say that it's a low salary. In addition to your yearly home tickets, they should offer you at least 20k per month. QF is paying blindly to many people there. Don't even decide on one advice. Take as much information as possible before making this difficult decision.
Hmm, still don't get it. All EC colleges provide yearly tickets. And schooling for kids.

Mandi,
I am not a US resident, so no taxes to pay I guess.
CMU did not ask me to pay for my air tickets. but they will not provide that for me. so it is an extra yearly expenses for me with a family.
thank you guys for the feedbacks, that was helpful.
gg123, doesn't matter where you earn your income, you owe US taxes if you are a citizen or resident of the US. You may be eligible for a foreign-earned income exemption if you meet certain, fairly stringent criteria. ok, I don't understand why CMU is asking you to pay for your yearly tickets home, that's not standard procedure. If you are making more in the US, by all means stay in the US.

Remember your gonna have to pay taxes if your a us citizen since its a u.s. university.
EC universities pay for children's education wherever they are admitted, but to my knowledge they don't pay for daycare. The housing that I've seen is pretty good, but there is always some variance. Make sure utilities, etc. are included, but I would assume they are.
QF (which includes the EC universities) has private medical coverage provided that is good for Qatar and foreign travel.
Do you receive a home leave allowance? Depending on position, most US based companies offer the cash equivalent of a plan ticket home every year for each family member.
The car allowance will not cover the full cost of owning, insuring, running a mid-size SUV (I would guess you would need about another 1,000-1,500 per month, depending on what you want). Don't drive anything small; otherwise it will become your coffin.
All that aside, the cost of living here depends on your needs. If you must have American foods, you can find them but at a high cost. Alcohol is about double (or more). Dining out is about 50-100% more for the US equivalent. Parks are free, the compound will have a weight room and pool, and QF has a robust social and events program that is free or cheap. My guess is that it would be pretty tough to save much on your salary and benefits, so I would not come here hoping to rake it in. I'm in a family of four and we spend about 10k or more a month on living expenses (not including car). We have a maid, but we don't eat out much with small children. I would say in comparison to other Western expats we live fairly modestly.
But you could definitely live reasonably well on this, and once here might be able to move up quickly within the other EC universities.
I think its a fair deal mate. For an RA position, 10K is pretty good. As per the education for kids, it varies from 15k-50k per year that is if your employer is not paying for it which they say they would pay for kids in grade 1 till whatever :)
PM me for specific question, anytime.
