Hi everyone,

I am 30 yrs old with 7 yrs of experience in telecomm engineering and living in Germany. I have received the following offer in Qatar for a senior engineer position:

Basic Salary
QAR 19,745

Housing(Single Status)
QAR 8,000

Transport
QAR 2,000

Communication Allowance
QAR 750

Total of Monthly Compensation Cash Components
QAR 30,495

In addition - non-monthly cash components :

Furniture Grant(for 4 years; amortized @ 40% for the first year & 20% for the next 3 years) QR 25,000 onetime payment after probation period
QAR 520.83 per month
QAR 6,249.99
End of Service Benefit(Gratuity) for every completed year(one month basic salary)
QAR 1,645.41

Is this a good offer? I am worried about the housing allowance as I may get married soon but they refuse to change the allowance if my marital status changes. How can I start the negotiation. I really appreciate your help ..Thanks

Hi, I think that the package is too low. You will leave you country for a 13000Eur more than your current annual package?

Believe, I worked in Germany and I know what I m talking about. In your package you don't have the monthly retirement amount so when you come back to your country you have to pay to cover all the period out the country

Hi ... The HR person int eh company says he cannot offer me what I expect because they already offered me the maximum in my grade ... is this true that salary grades at companies are not negotiable or it is a trick from the HR person? thank you

Please note that RH indexes Qatar at 107 over all GCC countries because it is the most expensive.

Hi, I'm new to this forum, and I'm in the middle of negotiations myself. We are in different industries, but refer to the Robert Half salary guide in the attached link to find your benchmark. http://www.roberthalf.ae/

They topped the basic salary to 22,509 QAR ... my lower limit which I find fair is 25 000 QAR .. Should I negotiate further or they may drop the negotiation? any experience and words of wisdom are welcome .. thank you

OK ... I am puzzled now, they do not pick up the phone, they promised they will check how much they could increase and call me back (was last week) but they did not. I also wrote them an Email but no reply .. is this normal in Qatar?

It's not really an increase in salary when you add in the cost of living in Doha and all the intangibles you lose by not living in Europe - such as retirement, health care, education for children, etc. The rule for expats is current salary plus 25% plus housing, education, transportation, etc, etc.

You have nothing to lose. Try it. You can leave anytime if you feel that the package doesn't fit you.

Hi everyone thank you for your feedback, I am a bit confused. Well for the housing allowance they cannot change it as it is fixed for singles but they promised once my status changes they will change the allowance. They are very strict and not willing to negotiate much (seem there is a long waiting line). It is a new small national company but not in mobile telecomm, more a specialized field. All in all, I am feeling that the base salary is low, I asked for 10 000 QAR increase per month, they said max what we can get may be 3k - 5k but there is no guarantee we will check ... i am desperate to move to the middle East into such a role (it combines business and engineering) but I know Qatar is not like Dubai, life is different, and for this small salary increase I am having the feeling that it is not a good deal ...

Being single, It will be very hard to negotiate a different package even if you say that you are planning to get married in the near future. It is not because they don't want to, but because there are guidelines in their recruitment process which they have to follow. Don't worry, with the salary and benifits that you mentioned, I am definitely sure that it is one of the top companies here in Qatar. It will not be hard for you to ask for an additional housing allowance once get married. You will just be required to submit certain documents/requirements. Good Luck.

NB. did they refuse or they might refuse to change your housing allowance once your marital status changes?

How much are u getting now in Germany and compare that salary with Qatar salary?for a western expat it on the lower side? Is this company local company or MNC?Consider that rents are going to increase this year due to construction boom.do you have to pay income tax in germany for money earned in Qatar? If u are going to get a 50% net increase above german salary then u consider the offer.Try in MEEZA.
