Teaching in Doha

Hi everyone,

I would like to move to Qatar with my family asap .

I need practical & honest advice about it, so I thought that this forum would be the best for this purpose.

I am considering to move to Doha with my wife and 2 young children for 3 to 5 years with the aim of saving money. I am an Italian national living in GB and my wife&kids are British citizens.

I am a secondary teacher in the UK and my wife is a legal exec.

When applying for jobs, how much should I look for in terms of salary, housing allowance, utilities and children school fees? Would it be feasible saving money?

How is living with young kids in Doha?

Would I be allowed to bring my old mother (she's got an income of €1000 pcm from her pension)?

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanx a lot

Were you able to negotiate a higher salary? I was offered the same of 10,500 and this is two years later. How do you find it?

If you do come, bring a no claims letter (if that is indeed your situation with your current insurer) you MAY get a discount but no guarantees.

I just paid 1250QR on a 8 cylinder SUV and $600 for a 6 cylinder SUV.  The $1250 included family disability and hospitalization. This is for a third party and good for one year.

2000QR a month for a car?????

I was planning to buy a scruffy second hand car.

I have heard that insurance is about 200QR a month and petrol price is really low. Is it true?

I might need to refine my negotiation skills then and try to get  13-14k...

thanx a lot again guys

Take a look on here to get an idea of the prices of second hand cars - be aware that a car that is older may not be eligible for comprehensive insurance.

You're about right on the insurance costs, that's similar to what I pay for comprehensive on a 5 year old car (I think that will switch to third party this year - I find out next month).

Unless you have the cash you may not qualify for a car loan for several months as usually they require 3 months of bank statements to prove your salary - you could try bringing UK bank statements but I don't know if that would work. With children you also want to buy a vehicle that is safe - get one with as many airbags as possible - AND CHECK IT AT THE DEALER to make sure there's been no "mistakes" in what the seller has told you.

Petrol is cheap I drive a Honda Accord and it costs me about 50 -55 QAR to fill it (when the low petrol light comes on) that's about GBP10

I spend about close to 3,000qr a month just on groceries for a family of 4 (granted that I am buying a lot of American brands from Megamart and Spinneys.)Clothes and shoes are horribly expensive  Double to triple the price in the States.  So probably double that of Europe.

One car alone will set you back at least QAR2000/month - that's 20% of your salary.  As for dental - my problem is finding a "real" one here that I feel I can trust.  Costs may or may not be covered by the medical - and I'd ask a lot  of questions about what is covered on the medical and WHERE you can go for treatment if needed.

I recommend you sit down and look at what you currently spend on food, entertainment, clothing (also expensive here), and recreational activities, if you want to join a gym or hotel facility (to get access to their gym/pool etc.) thats another 8,000 - 10,000 yearly (5* hotels are the only ones with private beaches here).

If you dine out at all - it can be cheap and cheerful or it can rival the more exclusive restaurants in London in price.

Quality groceries, the occasional meal out, purchase of alcohol (unless you don't drink of course), clothing for your family, internet access and proper TV channels at home, toys and treats for your children - I can tell you by own experience that you won't spend less than around 5k Riyals just in groceries and a few bottles of wine / cans of beer a month. You will need a vehicle for your wife / family vehicle - you cannot rely on mad taxidrivers in this place unless your wife wants to stay at home 24/7 and you all just stay home all the time. Dental treatment prices are ridiculous, so high you would think your fillings will be made of gold!

Try and negotiate a higher salary. I know (for example) that ISL pays a LOT more!

you shld know that spending habits vary.... if u get a job pls follow ur heart. with both u and ur wife working to compliment each other u will be able to save, personally i don`t think food is expensive if u make ur own meal, you shld raise ur salary expectation the higher you bargain the higher u will get. ur wife may earn more than u though

Really??? Why do you think so?

Isn't everything you need (except food and car) already provided by the school?

How much would it be a monthly food bill for a family of 4?

Thanx, Alunmar

You will save nothing on that salary. Cost of living here is very high.

Hi,

Any feedback about Newton International School???

I have been interviewed and to be fair they gave me a positive impression.

For the position (Classroom secondary teacher) they offer:

QR 10500 + fully furnished accomodation (3 bedroom apartment), free utilities (excluding gas), no school fees for my two children, medical cover (is dental care normally included in it?), annual flights, transportation to/from school.

ANY opinion welcome.

Cheers, guys

You won't qualify for any of the American Universities and probably not for QU.  You're not the right nationality for CNAQ.  Salaries drop for K-12 relative to tertiary institutions.  However, if you have excellent qualifications and experience, you may still be offered a reasonable salary at one of the UK or IB schools.

Never hurts to apply

Western teaches get more than QR 12,000. It is just the way it is. Negotiate.

I make almost 12,000 a month tutoring and substitute teaching, so that's not a lot.

Can your wife get a job that will supply the school costs?

Don't expect a position at QF if you don't have any university level experience.  These are semi-ivy league universities.  They won't take a high school teacher.

Do you have an advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate)?

Check with a Qatari University...

If the allowance doesn't include school fees, than forget it.  You will be paying approx. $80,000-100,000qr a year for school fees. (unless you want a public school (not sure if you can even send you child there), or a substandard private school.

Remember car payments and food is more expensive.  I spend almost double for food than I did back in the U.S.

Thanks Minoush & Mandi.

So, how would it be the average salary for a 'high school' teacher?

I saw some places offering 12000qr + housing & utilities allowance. I thought it was quite good and allowed me to save 4000-5000qr a month. Am i completely unrealistic?

I think I would be able to teach at university level too, but I haven't got lecturing experience. I might send a couple of applications anyway.

Cheers.

I was thinking that Mandi, but wasn't sure if "secondary" meant high school or university in the UK.

Well, if you're a secondary school teacher then you probably won't get a job at one of the US universities. And the salaries at the secondary schools in Doha aren't all that great. So I'm not sure what the attraction is for you in Doha, sorry.Mandi

Expect to pay 40,000-60,000qr a year for each student's school fees.

Nice housing will be 12,000-20,000 qr a month.

Try to get a position in Education City/Qatar Foundation.  That is the best place for educators as the salaries are good, and the benefits are fantastic.  They pay housing, education, fees, water/electricity, car allowance, and travel expenses.

Sad that they don't allow elderly people, but what Ricky said sounds promising!!!

Cheers

Ideally if you get job with qatar foundation or VCU or Texas A& M Qatar in teaching then your life is made . You will get good housing or good HRA and a great take home salary of QAR 30,000 to 50,000 per month based on your experience . Cost of expenses per family is QAR 18,000-20,000 per month including education for 2 kids per month , including exps on phone , grocery , electricity , water , car emi , petrol ,shopping etc if you wanna live uncompromisingly .

1 GBP =QAR 5.85 /5.90 approx . So if you get GBP 8000 per month

Salary then you can move . Parents >60 age is an issue here and they do not allow except on visit visas as this is strange problem . They feel old age ppl will come here for medical assistance and use the facilities . So your mother can stay here with u 6 months , go and again come for 6 months .

School-fees are double of what you indicated, at least for true British schools!

7000 - rent

3000-food

600-water, electricity, phone, internet, fuel

School fees not sure may be 1500 per month per student

total expenses = 14000 approx

Anything above is your savings.

 1 British pound = 5.837691 QR

Bringing old mother for a visit may be possible but long term residence is difficult

I'm afraid your mother must stay where she is. Qatar is NOT family friendly.
