Termination with a loan

Last weekend I came across a well educated Nepali fellow, got terminated with a loan on his head. His company cancelled his work visa 3 weeks back.
He took loan for his daughter's open heart surgery & do not have any saving now.
Bank has been chasing him to settle the outstanding. This fellow said human rights do not even allow him to enter their office. Nepal embassy turned their back asking him to arrange his loan amount to leave Doha.

I tried to browse answers in QL to help him find some way out, but couldn't find more clarity.
I could handover a 500 note to him, which might help him arrange his 2 meals for a month or 2.

Where such people should go?
These companies terminate without considering the employee overheads, their family commitments & social obligations.
I hear, numbers are growing everyday of such cases in Qatar. Who will hear their plight? Where they should seek help? A definite answer by someone from legal field will help many other QL members to help uneducated people in distress.

Dear Fubar & Fan_Ni_Sarap,

To my surprise, how can you assume all Nepali's draw a salary of 500 riyals a month?

Don't make your opinion by what 'you' see/hear around you.

This guy had a salary of 7,200 riyals a month. And yes HE belong to Nepal. Although he is young by his age, position but he is a 'knowledge bank' on global current affairs otherwise i would not have spoken in length hearing his story.

Fubar, all my American friends here in Doha are drawing pretty high salaries - higher than you can ever imagine.

Let me tell you, if you are drawing less than 11,000 US$ a month - you should assess why you are here & how much losses you incurred by drawing lesser than 11k salary; unless you are forced to work here on current package for 'personal circumstances'.

Never judge people by their nationality, color or appearance but only by their intelligence/ knowledge.

If your friend doesnt know anything about banking procedures when he took his loan and just signed whatever the bank asked him to sign, he might be screwed. Most loan are insured incase of termination. but if he signed a waiver that if he was terminated he will still pay the bank, check mate.

And if, as everyone else says, his loan is insured against termination by the employer, then all the more reason to believe he's trying to pull the wool over your eyes.

If you really believe him and want to help, take him to his bank, in person, and it would all be sorted out in an hour or two.

If he's telling the truth.

I'm sorry, but too much of the story doesn't add up.

As pointed out above, which bank would give a Nepali a loan to cover a surgery for his sister back home?

Add to that, if he was only terminated three weeks ago, why has the "Bank has been chasing him to settle the outstanding"? Loans are paid monthly, and his work visa hasn't even been cancelled that long.

The Nepalis I know have salaries of about 400/month, so giving him 500 will pay for his meals for a lot longer than 1 month.

Truly, I'd love to believe him and help him, but all too often I've met poorer guys who come here and take loans to buy clothes and alcohol and have a good time, and then when it comes time to leave they generate some sob story to milk money out of ignorant ex-pats who lap up the drama.

Give him money, by all means, but in my opinion, his story doesn't wash.

No concrete replies..

I think you all know, you don't take loans for 6 months, nor banks provide loans for 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 months, am I right?

Guys, your hard-hitting illogical replies displayed how you look upon society in general.

Thank you 'Om Maui' for your kind reply.

'Every_Mothers_Nightmare' (gosh what is this? hehehe) thanks to you as well for your kind reply. Is it possible for you to gather more information which banks those cases belonged to? This would help me & my friends in digging out more details & fight for this poor soul.

Fubar - Almighty brings similar situations to all 'heartless creatures' someday to mould their mindset. I can only wish, you & your family should not experience "worst of Gulf."

No, you are wrong. No bank can do any action like imposing travel ban immediately after getting termination letter. Bank has to report to police and thereafter to immigration department to impose travel ban, but this wll be applicable if he has due amount (arrears) for more than 3 months. Normally he can leave the country, but while he come bak to doha, immigation ban (black listed) will be there and he will be caught. can release only after getting NOC from the concerned bank.

Termination by the employer will be covered by the loan insurance, but most of the bank hide this information from the loan borrower. i.e bank representative will not give the insurance policy copy stating which are the items covered under insurance.

I think, the guy(neplai guy) had given wrong information to the bank while filling the application for loan. ie, if he says, the purpose of loan is for his sister's surgery, no bank will approve his loan!

I used to have a heart, until it seemed that everyone taking out a loan was doing to pay for his daughter's wedding, or pay for surgery, or to rebuild a house that was blown down in a storm, and so the list goes on.

I've heard it all over and over.

Call me heartless because I am.

Whatever the reason is, when u tried to take a loan u have to make sure that u can pay it back in full 100%....that's a responsibility & obligation for those who tried to take a loan. So my advise is.....u have to think clearly before u take loan and considering the number....if u're sure can pay back u can take loan with big amount, small amount, or if not...don't take any loan then.....

Thank you for your concern for this poor fellow. Ask him for a copy of the loan agreement, and check if there is something stipulated with regards to insurance taking over in case of involuntary termination.

if his loan is covered by an insurance from the bank, then we need to know if he is eligible. termination due to misconduct renders him ineligible.

let's hope he is covered, and eligible. good luck.

Maybe Qatar Charity could help.

But the moral of the story is, if you take a loan you should be 100% sure that you will be able to pay it back.

It's not your sponsor's business to ensure that you can repay loans, or your embassy's, or the bank's.

You took the loan, you have their money, and you agreed to pay it back.

His other option would be to get arressted and go to debtor's prison.

as far as i know when u take a loan there is also a insurance package which comes with it and you pay for that in the begining and every month also with the instalments...the insurance covers the pending amount incase of termination. However i dont know if this applies to all the banks but i know atlest 4 people who have been in the same situation and left the country without any hassle.
