What offer to expect after interview?

I have an interview at Cornell next week. I don't have a full itinerary yet of what I'm scheduled to do but I know that they will interview me (I don't know how many people and how long) and take my husband and me on a housing and city tour.

What should I expect with the salary range for pay grade 8? Is it negotiable? How often are raises given? Do they pay in a way to help me be bracketed for the least amount of taxes to owe to the US government?

With housing, what should I expect to be offered? How many rooms? If I choose a bigger apartment, does this lower the salary they plan to offer?

These questions may be premature since I don't have a detailed schedule of what I should expect when I arrive, but time's running, besides, there are some things they may not be able to tell me and other things I'd be too shy to ask without first having a clue.

Is it safe to assume that they want to hire me if they're flying me in for an interview and taking us on a housing/city tour? If so, would they show me a contract during the same short visit or would they wait to digest meeting me first before making a final decision? If it is offered to me during the visit, am I expected to sign immediately or will I be allowed time to ponder it?

Thanks ahead of time for reading my questions and addressing them!

What does "grossing up" a salary mean, Mandi?

During the interview they will ask you, do you have any queries?

Just a tip, That's the time to clarify your doubts.

No, they will give you your full salary then they will add an amount to pay for the taxes you owe on your housing, transportation, airfares, etc. Since housing is so expensive in Doha, you really don't want to be paying taxes on its value. It will have to be added as part of your income, though.

I just looked up "gross up salary" and this is the definition I got,

"To pay the full amount, without any deductions. This phrase is most frequently used in terms of salary; an employee can receive their salary grossed up, which means that they would receive the full salary promised to them, without deductions for tax. However, since salary must be taxed by law, the company would gross up the employee's salary so that after taxes they receive the full salary promised."

Basically, what they will offer me is the post-tax amount then?

Your salary will be "grossed up" to offset US taxes. Raises are small and once a year. If you don't have children, it will probably be a three-bedroom apartment. They will not lower your salary because of your choice. The decision and contract will be offered later, you have as much time as you need to decide. Yeah, since they are paying for two business class airfares and a 5-star hotel, they are very interested in you.

Those are a lot of questions, which I'm afraid I will not be able to answer. Only someone associated with Cornell will be able to guide you. But I can tell you this, that a grade 8 (Manager) in my company gets somewhere along 22K-25K to start with GROSS.

Salaries are always negotiable based on the years of experience and how impressed they are with you at the interview.

I'm sure you're gonna be here at least for a couple days, if not more. If you do happen to get a draft contract, you may wanna share it here on QL and then judge from the feedback.

GOOD LUCK! :-)
