Some safety measures all cyclists should know

Rain-free days of winter are the best times for numerous outdoor activities in Qatar. It’s during this time that parks are crammed with people of all ages, camping equipment and tents are on high demand and cyclists are seen everywhere. 

Riding a bicycle, we all know, has countless benefits. In fact, citing all the goodness behind riding one, France has even declared a day where no motor vehicle is allowed to be driven on the street. 

However, there are some safety measures and rules that all cyclists should follow everywhere, including Qatar. 

Below are a few such safety measures for cyclists-   

1-Always protect your head with a helmet. 

2- Assure bike readiness. Make sure your saddle is in a a comfortable position.

3-Do a quick bicycle test before you start riding it. Check whether the”quick release” wheels are secured well and the brakes function properly.

4- Ride on the right side of the road. If there are more riders, don’t ride in parallel but one after another. 

5- If there is a cycle path, stick to it and don’t use motorways or pedestrian ways. 

6- Stick the reflectors on the front and back sides and on the tires for clear visibility of other road users. 

7- Wear reflective / light coloured dress or safety triangle especially at night time to make you visible for others. 

8- Avoid busy and speed roadways as it is dangerous. 

9- Don’t play with bicycles in public road such as riding on a single tire. 

10- Don’t catch other cycles or vehicles or carry any items in way threaten your safety and others as well. 

11- Take care of parked cars as someone will be opening its doors or taking it out of the parked area. 

12- Use adequate lights in the front and backside of the cycles, bells or horn for alerting others in case imminent danger. 

13- Always hold the cycle handle with both hands except in case you require to make hand signs to communicate with other road users. 

14-Don’t get distracted when you’re cycling. Don’t listen to loud music that can block all the other noise or use the mobile while on the road
