aDSL Speed
By [email protected] •
Hi there,
I was consulting Qtel internet services. Considering ADSL lines they offer:
512 Kbps
1 Mbps
2 Mbps
Are the speeds simetric? When they say 1 Mbps it means 1 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload?
Thanks.
spybreak ,,, according to your saying "e-mail & web browisng" 256 is a good but not avilable choice
good luck
how much does it cost for my own ADSL just for internet access like emails and web browsing maybe a speed of 256 is enough for me.
Yes aturdido, you can purchase your own line. However some apartments come with adsl lines already installed and these are often shared.
swissgirl, yes unfortunately Qatar is pretty slow. I'm not sure why they haven't caught up with the rest of the world yet!
i mean we talk about adsl.right?
all under 5000 is stoneage.is Qatar really that slow or did i missunderstood something?
What tallg says is correct. Just check this URL:
http://www.internode.on.net/residential/internet/home_adsl/extreme/
However in Doha there shouldn't be too much problem with distances, if lines are good.
tallg - Can't a resident purchase it's own line?

jilfer, tcom - I don't really want to get into a discussion about transmission line theory (or come across as too much of a geek!), but distance from the exchange does make a difference because more noise will be generated on the line and the speed will have to reduce to overcome these.
A poor quality line to the exchange can also cause poor internet speed, so you're right from that perspective that it's worth contacting Qtel about it.
aturdido - in apartment blocks particularly, some landlords will purchase 1 or 2 internet lines from Qtel, and then use a router to connect several residents to each line.
I tried to say:
[ADSL is often shared in Doha. That's how some landlords set it up.]
can you enlight me about this subject?

---------------------------------------------------------
am good how about you
[img_assist|nid=50852|title=hmm|desc=|link=none|align=left|width=|height=0]
TCOM thx for clearing that up..by the way how are u?
---------------------------------------------------------
"Yesterday is the past,Tomorrow is a mystery,& Today is a gift that's why its called the PRESENT"
---------------------------------------------------------
The speed has got nothing to do with how close or far one is from exchange

You are lucky then jilfer. You must be close to the exchange or whatever.
No tallg i did not misread. Lima is on a 1mb connection and if she is getting only 545kbps download speed, then its poor. she is is getting only half the speed and she seriously need to check her connection. i always get above 800kbps for my 1mb connection, depending on the site i am trying to download , ofcourse.

Excuse me but you are wrong.
It's in Cable connections when you share the bandwidth. In ADSL your connection is directly to the ADSL station.
Take a look here:

Best regards.

Dazed and Confused
Have you misread jilfer? Lima is getting 545kbps download speed. That's good, surely?
Lima ur speed is terrible for 1 mb, verify again with qtel, i always maximum speed for my 1 Mb,if i am downloading from good servers. The best way to test ur maximum speed is try downloading a big file from gmail, like 3-5mb, they have on of the best servers, and check what is the download speed u are getting??? u should get around 110-140kBps

--------------------------------------------------------------------
On my 2mb it varies depending on the site I'm on. Between 150kb up to 290kb

That's your wireless network speed and strength, not your internet speed.
it says 100% and speed 54 mbps. Is this correct for 1MB?
How can it be a 512k line if the speed is greater than 512 (545)? If you had a 512k line you would not expect to see a speed of 512.
Am sure your line is not upgraded, you are still getting 512k, call them and ask , probably there is a mistake,
call 111 and ask them to varify if ur line is really upgraded to 1MB .
Regards
is terrible :(

Nearly maximum upload speed, and over half maximum download speed - sounds pretty good to me!
looked slow to me :(
That's a pretty good speed lima foxtrot.
my upload & download, I'm on 1MB and the results are: upload 110kbps & download 545kbps. Seems rather slow & i'm sure the results were round about the same when we were on 512k.
The speeds quoted are the absolute maximum under the perfect conditions. You will never achieve them in practice. This is common the world over.
the tiny little letters on the back of the application form say that the speed is not guaranteed!
No way you can claim them.
ADSL means Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.
Uplink for
512K is 128K
1MB is 256K
2MB is 256K
Try to test your speed from Speedtest.qa.(Need java for this) and if your are not satisfied you have all the right to complain to Qtel.
[img_assist|nid=53652|title=|desc=|link=none|align=center|width=|height=0]
No, they are not symmetric. Upload speed is nearly always significantly less than download speed, wherever you are in the world.
aturodido, the speeds are not what you get, because you share the bandwidth with a couple of other users!
You'll find Internet by Satellite providers in this region (search in Altavista or Yahoo). But don't be surprised about their fees.
Is there no way to get more than 2 MB/s? That's very slow.
Ok.
So the speeds are really:
512 Kbp / 128 Kbps
1 Mbps / 128 Kbps
2 Mbps / 128 Kbps
Thanks for the information.

Welcome to Stone Age.. You are our one millionth customer. Thank you for your cooperation.
I got the 2 Mbps line and it is not very impressing(Qatar is 10 years behind Northern Europe when it comes to Internet services.)
and thought it would be better but we still get a download speed lower than 64. I suppose it just depends how far you are away from the exchange!
WITH 512 .....download is around 64
WITH 1MB......download is around 128
WITH 2MB......download is around 256
nooooooooo
i have 512 but the download never exceeds 75 so if u r looking for a high speed for dl u must have higher speed
no. When it says that it means 1Mbps NOT 1MBps so your download will be around 100KB since 1KB is 10Kb and there are 1000Kb's in 1Mb.
Your upload will be 128Kpbs as it is the same for all.
The upload speed is the same for all three lines.
