American Going to Work for Qatar Airways
Hello All;
I am an American who has been offered a possible position with Qatar airways and, of course, i have many questions. Some I expect to have answered when I fly over in two or three weeks. I am hoping that some of you would be so kind as to answer some of my others.
Here we go:
1) What kind of reputation does Qatar Airways have as an employer? Are they a good employer?
2) As an American can I expect any different treatment from the other ex-pats that live there?
3) I will be bringing my children over at some point, how are the schools and can anyone suggest some of the better schools? MY kids are 1 and 3 years old.
Do I have any real secuirty issues to worry about? Everything I have read on this web site and many others tells me that Qatar is about the safest place in the world to live and it sounds wonderful. Any insight that you could give would be a great help.
Many thanks
A new airline? They have been in the air for around ten years! And, regardless, it is certainly not an excuse as to how people are being treated in the airline by the management.
Hello
I noticed from your responses to the American gentleman you might have some information about Qatar and Qatar Airways.
Do you think I can find a bachelor/spinster pad for 2500QAR
What is the closest area to Qatar Airways HQ to get affordable accomodation?
I am still debating the offer I got where it's worth my trek.
thanks
cheers
kbracing, i'm also in the process of interviewing with QA. Can you please give me some feedback on how yours went and what sort of interview process they follow.
Super7, do you know the specifics as why they are such a terrible employer?
Kbracing looks like you have signed up now but QA has a terrrible reputation as an employer. I know plenty of people who work for them and I am told it is pretty terrible.
Good Luck
In Qatar, the public sector (most of the major companies) are preferred as employers - they pay better.
I'm Australian and have been here for about three years. As for a different treatment, general no but there are minor details - westerner passport holders might be treated little differently at times. For example, you get visit visa from the airport upon arrival, visa requests might be processed quicker ... etc. In terms of pay, some organizations pay a percentage of the wage - perhaps 20% extra as allowance for westerners. Most people are easy going and will treat you the same - though people are always curious to know your origin and ask many questions :D
Qatar is certainly a very secure country ... much more than you can imagine. It is also a great place for a family oriented person.
As for schools, there is the American School, Qatar Academy ... etc. You will be able to find out more info when you arrive here.
I hope you have a good time here.
Easy
Thanks to you all for you comments. I appreciate all of your input. My family and I are really looking forward to the big move now all i have to do is get the contract!
Hello Kbracing,
Regarding the reputation of QatarAirways it is vary, some says good and some says bad, as for me I consider it good, people have to understand this is a new flight company and they are growing very fast more than any other airline, they are very restricted in work there as I heared from the crew.

Hi Kbracing,
I understand you might be apprehensive about coming to the middle east but rest assured it's not as it's shown in the media. Personally i think it's sad we've gotten so used to such biased coverage. the Middle East is a beautiful place and yes, there are the few that create the headlines but it's not fair to judge the whole by the few. Qatar is a calm peaceful country (apart from the traffic heheh)and I don't think you would encounter any safety issues simply because you are an American. In general people don't really care whether you are American, Canadian, British or whatever, an expat is an expat that's all.
Anyways, i'm sure if you decide to come here you'll have a wonderful time! :)
I'm not sure I know anything about #1 or #3, although I've heard mostly positive things about Qatar Airways, and I've had pleasant experiences flying with them.
2) As an American can I expect any different treatment from the other ex-pats that live there?
I haven't noticed any different treatment from other "Western expats" since moving here over 15 months ago. If you are talking about all expats then I'll say that I have noticed some different treatment. You may find that government processes in regard to the medical exams necessary for visa, for example, are more streamlined for Western expats, although it could also be a function of what employer you work for. I'm not saying that I approve of it, but you may observe such class distinctions at some point in the process.
This is probably not the kind of "different treatment" that you were speaking of though.
