Are there many young expats in Qatar?
By ConsideringQatar •
Hi,
I will be offered a job in Qatar (awaiting the proposal) which will see me getting a huge tax free income and some excellent work experience. I am from Australia and having fun is always on the top of my agenda. What is Qatar like from that perspective? Are there many young (upto 35) expats in Qatar..........
Please share your experiences... how have you found it etc.......
Cheers
FA
Beck - you will be disappointed with the Irish Harp - it is SOOOOO expensive. The golf club is much cheaper!
Considering - try joining the Rugby Club - full of younger expats and you'll get some excercise too! (you don't have to play to join). Darts league starts up in October. Hash House Harriers run on a Monday evening - plenty young uns there to meet.
Go for a pint at Rydges - Aussie Lengends bar on the top floor is always a good hangout too.
Most of all, don't take others' negative points to heart - come and make your own mind up.
Oh, and I'm a young 30-fifteen ;o)
Hey there,
I am from Aussie and i have been here almost 1 week. My partner has work over here and i have come over with him with our baby daughter. Depending on where you will be staying depends on what is near you. We are in the diplomatic area(west bay) and youcant really walkanywhere at themoment because of the construction going on and theheat. The drivers are also craqzy and wont hesitate to hit a pedestrian which i am sure you have read about. Thsimeans that travel is limited to taxis or limos...or if you have your own car and get your drivers licence over here.
You need to be mobile to go out. As there is only one alcohol store in the country that i know of, and which you need a licence to purchase drinks from (whichallows you to purchase an amount based on a % of your income)you wont be doing much drinking. The Sheraton has an Irish bar that i have been told about that we will be checking out soon, and thre golf club has a bar and a few other places. It is these places that have some kind of night life but nothing like home i dont think. Some places require to to purchase a membership to get into their bars (usually high end hotels), and single males tend to have difficulty getting in sometimes. Will let you know over the next2 weeks!
Shopping malls from what i have seen at City Centertend to provide tghe entertainment because it is summer and they are open very late and have a lot of entertainment for kids.
If youare partnered you will have mroe of a chance of geting into places. Oh and it is really frickin hot here (52 degrees the other day) so unless you work outdoors(and i will feel sorry for you if you do), you will probably be spending most of your time indoors in the aicon.
Hope that helps. Buy the lonely planet book and google Living in Qatar...youwill find heaps of info.
