Questions before moving to Qatar

Hi Everyone,

We are thinking about moving to Qatar by virtue of a sponsorship visa. It all seems very exciting but I have a few questions.

Firstly we are a Christain family and would like to know how Christians are able to practice their religion in Qatar. We respect the Muslim beliefs and lifestyle but are wondering how much of that we would be required to adhere to. Can we openly admit to being Christians - my son is 4 and announces his beliefs to anyone who'd give him the time of day.

Secondly how are women and children treated. Do I need to have my husband accompany me to parks/shops/pools/beaches? Can I take the children myself and am I allowed to swim with them - or would I not be allowed to wear a swimming costume?

I know these questions might sound a bit ignorant, but I'd rather be ignorant and ask, than stay ignorant!!

Thanks!

Songogga

PS, on public beaches one-piece bathing suits or shorts and a T-shirt are always fine. I'd leave the bikini behind but then again I did that 20 years ago!

There would be no issue with your beliefs here in Qatar, there are churches. No-one would bat an eyelid at kid saying things.

As to having your husband accompany you everywhere.... no way..... Doha is just the same as living in any modern city, you can come and go and do what you like. Wearing swimwear at beach, resort etc would be fine and within a compound, you can pretty much do anything.

Welcome, songogga to you and your family! Qatar is very open to Christians practicing their religion as long as there's no proselytizing of Muslims. There are many churches here and I know you will find the right one for you and the kids. You might also want to find the mums and kids groups that meet here in Qatar and feel right at home from the start. There really isn't any problem with you being out and about with the kids, your husband certainly doesn't need to be with you. Novita's group and Expatwomanqatar.com can also help you with information.
