Saving money?!?

Hi guys,

I am a secondary school teacher from UK who had enough of being skint all the time, so I thought to move to Qatar with my family (wife&2 young children) with the hope of saving some money.

I am evaluating an offer from one of the schools in Doha. They offer:

QR 10500 + fully furnished accomodation (3 bedroom apartment), free utilities (excluding gas), no school fees for my two children, medical cover (is dental care normally included in it?), annual flights, transportation to/from school.

How much do you reckon I can save per month???

Could you please tell me how much (roughly) it's an average food monthly bill/car insurance?

Any advice is much appreciated

Cheers, guys

If you are getting some additional money e.g. 2-3 bonus per year, then enough you can save in one year.  Major cost is School Fee and Accomodation which you don't have to pay at all. So, I would say you can easily save aroud QR 3,000 per month plus any bonus you get in a year.

For medial cover, it depends which package you will get. Some companies provide dental cover with co-insurance and you only contribute upto 10% of total invoice (there is a limit of dental cover as we have QR 9,000 per year for each family member)

Regards & All the Best.

PM me the name of the school - money is not everything here.Car insurence is fairly cheap compared to UK standards £200 - 300 per year I'd say.But at 17 pence a litre you will save a bomb on fuel.Nourishing,  proper, basic home cooking will be cheaper or on a par wirth that in the UK.Any other monies coming in other than the 10.5K?Brit is about right, you should save about 5K a month, ie £800-900, if you forgo luxuries. :)

Cheers guys. I have realised that I should ask for a better salary...

How much would it be car insurance per month for a scruffy/basic car?

Your salary alone is not enough. Try to convert your salary if it's worthy to live here with your family.  If your wife will find a work too then it will help you save. All you have to spend is for food and personal things as u have said that other than that, all is being provided by your company.

Look Teacher, in order to remove any confuse, as your accomodation and school fees and transportation etc. are provided by the school, your expenditures will not exceed any way 5000-6000 thousand QR. and the rest will be considered as a net saving, now you have to determine if such saving is enough or not for you according to your income in the UK.

I believe that you answered your own question with your first paragraph!!! You WIL save money - how much is down to you and  your families spending habits - we cant comment on those - the REAL question is, how much do you want to up sticks and move to Qatar - if you and your wife are genuinely committed then its a no brainer - if there is one iota of doubt then stay in the mess that is the UK in 2011 + ...................................................
