I re-read Catch 22 a few months ago and what struck me was the absudity of the situation that the American service men were in. The phrase "Catch 22 situation" is used often out of context in the media today and perhaps that mis use is what you are referring to. The phrase has come to be applied to where there is a no win situation or a "chicken before the egg" arguement. Whereas Heller was writing about futility, hopelessness and frustration.
