Another Brit in trouble in Dubai :O(
A British holidaymaker has been charged with indecency in Dubai after walking through the world's largest shopping centre in a bikini.
The woman was buying clothes and gifts in the Dubai Mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'.
The pair then became embroiled in a heated row in front of hundreds of bemused shoppers.
Incensed by the Arabic woman's comments, the British woman told her to 'mind her own business' before stripping out of her clothes and 'taunting' the locals by walking around in only her bikini, it is alleged.
The mall's security team then intervened and called the police, who arrested the British holidaymaker.
The woman, whose identity is unknown, was still being questioned by officers in Bur Dubai police station last night.
A source within Dubai police said: 'The British woman was wearing a very low top and most of her legs were on display.
'The Arabic woman stopped to criticise her and that's when she stripped off. That's when things started to get out of hand.
'We ended up questioning both women after receiving a call from the mall security staff.'
There are numerous signs around the Dubai Mall urging women to 'wear respectful clothing-Similar messages are flashed up on LCD screens in most shopping malls across the United Arab Emirates.

I notice a few comments state that the dress culture of various countries ought to be respected by others. Why,then,is there so much outrage when European countries are unhappy at women wearing full body covering? It is not pleasant to see only a pair of eyes looking out at you,if they aren't hidden behind dark glasses. As humans, facial expressions are a vital part of communication.
Before any one jumps on the racist theme,I am not remotely racist, and I do respect the dress code here.
We have no right to intervene individuals freedom..but having said that..it is an important responsibility of a person to respect the customs / tradition of the host country where he or she live in....one final one brit...do you have a pic of that girl by any chance?? huh?
i'm guessing she wasn't your typical obese brit to be wearing a bikini.
They keep proving their bum is not real and its their brains-
i think being told off what to or what not to wear drove the british lady to provoke further just to prove a point lol i understand her completely
Just to update you. She was let off by the judge..After viweing CCTV footage he aportioned a lot of the blame on the local woman...
this reminds me of a scene in SEX & THE CITY 2 ;)
well said ex expat. i also think she would have not over reacted if the local women haven't pushed her buttons.
Ice maiden Shhhhhhhhh :(
lol at feeling itchy in dress
she was at the end of her vacation or something and may have been anyways on her way out since she was buying clothes and gifts. Perhaps she was feeling particularly testy as well..whatever reason she should have controlled herself.Wasn't worth getting a criminal record over such disputes now was it?
...stripping in public won't really be a norm anywhere else...
...what's with the Brit? She should have shrugged that away...
she shud b taught the right lesson..donno y these ppl r so anti-dress :P..feel itchy in full dress..
the brit is lucky she wasn't spat on - I've known 3 people who've been subjected to that treatment by locals.
ummm... Emperess's new clothes;-P
place to slap women who don't dress according to YOUR standards of decency.
by the idea of locals accosting people in public for behavior or dress. If the woman didn't like it, she should have gone to security in the first place instead of taking it upon herself to be the "decency policewoman".
The summer heat just got to her brains.
Curves?? How do you know? Were you oogling???
BRITAIN GOT CURVES TOO ;)
Finally:
"BRITAIN GOT TALENT"!
:)
didn't she get educated, how to dress in Middle east?
as some one said they can dress indoors as they want, atleast in public places must not dress like "Look at Me"
"....She said: "We are aware of the case. We have offered consular assistance." But she said the charges have since been dropped."
Ah, common sense it would seem has won the day...GOOD!!
drmana...why don't u believe in that pic ??? now don't temme you want to see the missing upper parts :P
you are right i think, drmana.
someone mention the weather is getting hot day by day
what a good excuse all the malls in arab countries are
quite cool and if any women feeling hot better to go anyother country not to middle east as everyone knows too hot hear ....
jameskgm...thanx for the source and oic...she got nice tattoo on the back :D
I think the local lady was totally out of order - how dare she impose HER standards on this British woman. "...accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'." THAT is judgemental on the part of the local woman - there is no reference to any other person stopping or interfering with this British woman so I have to infer from that that the local woman created an unnecessary confrontation because she imposed her own values NOT necessarly the values of the UAE on the British woman and the situation. This "lack of guidance" in terms of what is or is not acceptable has been the subject of other threads on QL and whilst for residents there is sensibility in our approach, for a tourist, how can it be anything other than a minefield!! If she had been buying clothing, I infer from that that the chances are she had been in the Mall some time - yet it would appear that neither security or the police or indeed ANYONE in authority chose to politely "have a word". Then out of nowhere, this Arabic woman starts criticising her for wearing "revealing clothing"!!! I agree that what follwed was crass and unnecessary and the British woman acted in an idiotic way in doing what she did but I also believe that the local woman is equally cullpable in creating an unnecessary confrontation in the first place. She was a holidaymaker for goodness sake NOT an expat worker with years under her belt in the region - I have absolutely no doubt that she felt she was perfectly at ease in her attire and that the verbal assault from the local woman was totally unjustified hence her action - which - I do conceive was misplaced and naive but given her experience of the Gulf which we are not made aware off, not entirely suprising. I hope that if this case comes to court that the authorities take a broader view than recent cases which DID concern Brits who had been in the Emirates some time and should have known much better.
I don't believe that the pic in that newspage actually is of the lady in the news.
http://latestnews.virginmedia.com/news/world/2010/08/05/bikini_briton_arrested_in_dubai
due to my curious nature
can anyone tell me, she was really a britain or an immigrant from 3rd world :O)
yeah don't mess with the locals while in the Gulf wearing your bikini top :D
sheer arrogance i must say....
Moral of the Story: Dont mess with the locals while in Gulf.
"The woman was buying clothes and gifts in the Dubai Mall, fully dressed but in a low-cut top, when she was accosted by an Arabic woman and criticised for wearing 'revealing clothing'. "
Perhaps the fault lies with both. She was fully dressed and probably thought that she was OK. It might have been better to walk away when accosted by the local lady.
well done
hats-off to you superb britain :P
both were stupid .the first one --should really mind her own business and if she doesn't know how to wear low cut clothes or not allowed to (probably she ever wanted)she should not object.what she will do at beach i wonder and who was she a moral teacher.
the second one -- should not have responded in such a bizarre way in a country where you have strange laws.
AWESOMEE!!! WELL DONE BRITS
we need whole body pictures! Lol!
yes Pic please :P
I strongly support Drac & rebel's demand for source & pics.

drmana...what about the see through clothes women wear in Doha malls too ??? thats a crime...why don't someone criticise on them ???
@phynix...LMAO ...well said...such a decent lady..the arab lady criticised and she removed those clothes :P
Khattak...I was, am and will be (???) be a good boy ...:)
Koi Shak..:)
saeedkhan ..em not so stupid to walk around naked in doha malls :P bikini won't suit me ..lolz....i prefer roaming around in Lungi,,,,
Pajju...i want to place and order for a silk Lungi please :P heheeeeeeee
rebel, as per the law of the land where that stupidity was committed, it was indeed a crime :-)
Again some lesson learn. You need to respect others to be respected in return.
Khattak...nah, not useless.... just a good boy as Khanan said...:)
drmana...it was stupidity,,but not a crime...wandering around in bikini is not a crime :P hehe..when u can do that in 5star hotels and public beaches then why not in malls?? :P
Khanan.... happy, good boy? Since when? :P
the Brits and Dubai had something common..
the should be well-educated prior to their departure to UAE.
Happy..the good boy :P
I think there must be some strict punishment so others get lesson from that.
I hope they come up with something similar to this.
The heading should have been....another brit trouble maker caught in dubai...
I'm truly speechless!
saeedkan, go and search the meaning of Sarcasm :-)
Never underestimate the predictability of stupidity! :O
Stupidity becomes crime sometimes......
you can't blame her...the bloody temperature is gettin warmer day by day :P
happy....Damn, you are useless :(
eventhough you are raised in a different culture, you should respect the culture of the country you are visiting/working...
just my point of view...
lol Khattak... just would have asked her to wear her clothes and dropped her safely wherever she wanted to ....:)
Saeedkan...the best thing is to lower your gaze when you see someone wearing revealing outfit...not to slap them.
Mandi...believe me, most of people just dont know the meaning of their T-Shirt's Slogan :D
happy...what next you would've done to her? Come on, tell me, I dont want to fantasize much :P
I saw a guy today at Villagio with an incredibly vulgar and X-rated slogan on his T-shirt. I hope to God he had no idea what it said.
Mandi
lol Khattak maybe both of us can help each other with our anger issues.
lol...I would have loved to escort her out safely after she stripped out of clothes...;)
WK...You can be her best Councilor :P
Ok this one was really stupid. Someone take that girl to a psychiatrist or an anger management class.
What are the Brits upto nowadays? Though, the Arab had nothing to do with her dressing but the way she allegedly responded was something really provoking.
