The first known roundabout for traffic was Columbus Circle in New York City. The idea did not take off in the US but it was an idea eagerly taken up by the British who love everything American. Roundabouts are also popular in France. This is because although the French hate everything American, the British and French (who claim to hate each other) actually have an enduring love affair with each others country.

Roundabouts seem to work well in the UK and in France where the standard of driving is high. Here they are a disaster.
