there is nothing in the text of islam to say this is an established sunnah (something the prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did or encouraged).
As well as this, during the marriage process, there is no gift given at the agreemment to marry (engagement if you like), the gift is given by the man at the 'nikkah' when the marriage is contracted and can be a ring, other jewelry or gifts or even cash, the woman doesnt have to give her husband anything.
a ring makes a nice mahr (bride gift) as it can be worn but we shouldnt make it something expected, what is given for mahr can be anything the couple choose, in some cases a companion of the prophet muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would teach his new wife a portion of the Quran he knew and she didnt and this was the mahr, other times jewelry was given and other times cash, the sister can really demand what she wants and if the guy wants to marry her he has to pay up.
