S** Jewelery people called and offered to make a deal at 15% deduction and returning the cash.
Although I am not still at peace with my decision, I accepted the offer because I thought the consumer protection complain might be a long-drawn affair.
S** jewelery still maintains that their certificate is correct. However, I am not convinced because I had the diamonds checked at 3 independent labs in India and the certificates from all 3 agreed that the diamonds were indeed inferior. (I could get this done without additional expenses, because one of my cousins is a jeweler in India.)
Specifically: the issues were
1. The Clarity was inferior: according to S** it was 'VS' (very slight); but the diamonds were actually of 'SI' (slightly included) grade. (See http://www.igiworldwide.com/en/4cs_clari.htm )
2. The Color was inferior: 'G/H' according to S**, but there were some pieces of an inferor grade of 'I'. (See http://www.igiworldwide.com/en/4cs_color.htm )
Sky also did not give me a written response to my complain letter. When I insisted, the store manager asked me leave my address (which I have mentioned in my complain letter - I seriously doubt if the store manager even read my complain!) - and they will write back. Let's see....
All in all the value of diamonds was put at less than one-third of my purchase price due to these defects.
I had bought the jewelery for my sister, and it was she who discovered the inferior quality of diamonds in India. Therefore it was embarrassing.
I have learnt my lesson now - as far as quality of diamonds is concerned, DO NOT rely on the certificate from the shop - insist for IGI certificate.
Nevertheless, thanks for the encouragement, fellow QL-mates!!
