I find the practice of restricting unmarried tourist couples from sharing a room to be a shot in the foot for some of the hotels here, and qatar's reputation as a forward thinking middle eastern country that's trying to attract people from all around the world.

Some hotels are ok with it, others ask for marrage certificates when you check in (at which point you turn around and walk out).

There is a fine balance between ensuring muslims adhere to their code, and forcing outsiders to submit; just as there's a balance between respecting the customs in a country (being discrete), and shoving everyone's face in it.
It seems some hotels understand the need for compromise, others are determined to force submission (or bankrupcy).
